FACT: Bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases to people, but they can carry disease-causing organisms and still create serious health concerns inside a home or business.
Bed bug bites can cause itching, swelling, skin irritation, allergic reactions, and secondary infections if the bites are scratched. They can also cause stress, anxiety, and sleepless nights because no one wants to worry about being bitten while trying to rest.
Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers. They can be brought home from hotels, rental properties, used furniture, luggage, clothing, dorm rooms, and even vehicles. Once inside, they hide in mattress seams, box springs, headboards, baseboards, furniture, cracks, and other tight spaces near where people sleep or sit for long periods.
Helpful Tip:
When traveling, inspect the mattress seams, headboard, and furniture around the bed before unpacking. Keep luggage off the bed and floor when possible. After returning home, wash and dry travel clothes on high heat to help reduce the chance of bringing bed bugs inside.
Seeing bites, spotting small black stains on bedding, or finding live bugs should never be ignored. Early action can make a big difference.
