Whether you’re thinking about starting your own private practice or you’re already in it and realizing there are pieces no one taught you — I wrote this book for you.

Employee to Business Owner: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Starting Your Own Private Practice covers the business side of running a practice: structure, finances, insurance paneling, marketing, and the operational systems that keep things running without running you into the ground.

I built it from my own experience launching my practice in Knoxville and from years in corporate operations before I ever became a therapist. It’s designed to work as a start-to-finish guide or as something you can pick up when you need help with a specific area.

If you’ve been winging the business side and feeling it — this might be your next step.

If you’re building a private practice, here’s a ratio most therapists are never taught—and it changes everything:

✨ 80% of your client-acquisition energy → relationship building
✨ 15% → visibility (speaking, writing, community involvement)
✨ 5% → advertising

I know—that feels backwards.

We’re told to “post more,” “run ads,” and “fix our SEO.” But here’s what I’ve seen again and again:

👉 One strong relationship with a physician, school counselor, pastor, or attorney who trusts your work will send you more ideal clients than months of paid ads.

Advertising isn’t bad.
It’s just the cherry on top—not the foundation.

This mindset shift is one of the most freeing things for therapists who value connection, integrity, and sustainability. And it’s something most of us were never taught in grad school.

That’s why I walk clinicians through this exact framework in my book Employee to Business Owner—so marketing stops feeling gross, confusing, or exhausting…and starts fitting who you actually are.

💬 Reflection question:
Who is one relationship you could intentionally nurture this month that aligns with the clients you most want to serve?

Why I Wrote This Book
I’ve worked in group practices. I’ve owned a group practice. And now I run a solo practice.
Each path taught me something valuable—and each one is the right fit for someone.
So why did I downsize? Because I realized what I love most: working with clients, working with therapists, and teaching—whether that’s therapy models or business models. I wanted to help therapists build their own practices, have access to their own financial independence, and make their own financial decisions.
But here’s what I kept hearing along the way: “I think I want to go out on my own someday… I just don’t know where to start.”
They had questions about finances, legal structure, insurance panels, marketing, systems. And too often, they were piecing together answers from Google searches and Facebook groups, hoping they weren’t missing something important.
I wrote Employee to Business Owner for them.
Not because solo practice is the only path—but because if it’s YOUR path, you deserve a clear roadmap to walk it confidently.
I believe therapists can build thriving, sustainable practices that honor both their clients and their own wellbeing. I believe six figures is possible with the right strategy—if that’s your goal. And whether you’re chasing growth or simply craving more freedom and flexibility, I believe you shouldn’t have to figure it all out alone.
If private practice ownership has been on your heart, this book was written with you in mind.

If you’re a therapist thinking about starting your own private practice, you probably have a lot of questions.
What kind of business entity do I need? How do I get on insurance panels? What should I charge? Do I need a website right away?
I put together a step-by-step guide that walks through all of it—13 chapters covering the legal stuff, the money stuff, the marketing stuff, and the “things no one told me” stuff.
It’s called Employee to Business Owner, and I wrote it because I remember how overwhelming this felt when I was figuring it out.

I'm honored to be featured in Knoxville Voyager! In this interview, I share my story—from leaving an abusive relationship with $48 to my name, to starting my private practice with $14 in the bank, to now running two businesses I'm passionate about. It wasn't a straight path, but every hard season prepared me for this work. If my story encourages even one person to keep going, it's worth sharing. 💛

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Jones. Hi Lisa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today? My path to where I am today […]

🌿 Is Burnout Quietly Costing You the Work You Love?

I’ve sat with many therapists and leaders who thought they just needed to “push through.”

But burnout doesn’t always look like falling apart.
Sometimes it looks like:
• Forgetting simple things with clients
• Avoiding calls or team meetings
• Feeling detached from the work that used to give you purpose
• Wondering if maybe you’re just not good at this anymore

That’s not incompetence.
That’s exhaustion — showing up in disguise.

When we’re burned out, it costs more than our energy.
It costs clarity, confidence, and often the very work we were called to do.

That’s why I created the Burnout Reset Session — a 90-minute professional consultation for helpers and leaders who need to pause, reflect, and find their way back to balance.

During our time together, we’ll:
• Identify where burnout is showing up most
• Clarify what’s within your control
• Build a simple, values-aligned plan for recovery and sustainability

Investment: $247
(This is professional consultation and education — not clinical therapy.)

🍂 I have 3 sessions available before Thanksgiving for those ready to reset.
