This Hispanic Heritage Month, RSC teammate Kelsey shared some of her family’s experiences as Cuban Americans:

“We come in all colors of the rainbow. Every country has different cultures and what you’re used to being around is what you normally will respond to, but be open-minded that it might be rude and treat them like a human.

Just because someone’s English is broken, doesn’t mean they don’t know all the words that you do. Doesn’t mean someone’s illiterate because they speak broken English or have an accent. They’re trying. I’ve experienced it a lot with my dad and my aunt – they have heavy accents.

I do really appreciate when people appreciate when someone’s trying. When someone is trying to talk to us in Spanish – it’s so cute. Thank you for trying your hardest. It’s really appreciated. I get what you’re trying to say, I’m not going to make you struggle. Why can’t it be like that? If you see someone struggling and they need help, help them regardless of the language they’re speaking.”
