Thanks to WUTK 90.3 The Rock Volunteer Radio’s Benny Smith for the reminder that nine years ago today, a largely unknown Sturgill Simpson took the stage at our monthly musical variety show, Scruffy City Ramble (Live from the Square Room). While the audience may not have known him when he began playing, it was obvious to everyone that he was the real deal. Four months later, he made the country music industry stand up and take notice when he released his debut album, High Top Mountain.

This show aired on WBIR and PBS, as well as being broadcast live on WUTK and rebroadcast on stations across the country. Check the link in comments to view the entire show!, which also featured performances by Henry Wagons, Lydia Salnikova, and this mountain.

This week, several artist and creative consultations have served as a reminder that we will all run into roadblocks throughout our careers - sometimes self-inflicted, sometimes entirely imagined, and sometimes due to factors beyond our control. But there’s always a way around, over, or through them if you’re willing to put in the effort.

It’s truly energizing to help people realize their potential and create a pathway to the next level of their personal and professional success. That spark when they realize what steps to take, the light in their eyes as the fire is rekindled … it’s everything.

“We’re told the money was the same and (the Nash and Anthony families’) decision was based on a grudge held over the Save the Rock Block campaign, which successfully prevented a budget hotel development,” Chris Cobb said. “We’ve asked the firm that won the bid to sell us the property, so we can preserve Exit/In and ensure its able to continue serving Nashville’s creative working class. Should our bid fail, all money raised will be donated to the National Independent Venue Association and Music Venue Alliance Nashville.”

Exit/In, Nashville’s oldest rock and roll club, is under contract to be sold to AJ Capital Partners, the developer behind the Graduate Hotel.

“While streaming has helped most survive, it’s helped the major labels get even richer. In 2019, research group MBW figured the three major labels each made around $1 million an hour from streaming; only the biggest independent labels clear that much in a year. The top seven artists on Spotify each earn around half a million dollars per year from streaming on the service, while Spotify royalties pay the bottom 99 percent of artists an average of $25 annually.”

A year without live music has been a disaster. So has corporate power in streaming, recording, and ticketing. Antitrust may be the only solution.

We’ve just learned that our friend Jeff Livingston passed away unexpectedly following a car accident yesterday. Jeff and his wife Becki Grace were the Attack Monkey poster distribution crew for many years, and they got engaged at Rhythm N’ Blooms Festival. Jeff has been part of Knoxville’s music community for decades and he will be greatly missed. If you can spare a few dollars to assist Becki and the family with any costs they may incur, it would be greatly appreciated. Rest In Peace, Jeff.
