Important Update & Next Chapter

This transition will still allow space to continue supporting EMDR clinicians through consultation, certification support, complex case collaboration, and intensive planning, now within the broader Creekside framework of care. My intention for 2026 is to simplify. Again, I’m grateful for this community and excited to move forward together in this next chapter. I encourage you to follow my group practice to keep up to date on offerings, especially the EMDR Nerd Herd, a free book study for EMDR-trained clinicians.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me through my practice website at www.creeksidecounseling-wellness.com. The new consultation page will be up in 2026 with a direct link to the acuity scheduling page.

Assessing Readiness for EMDR

One of the most important skills as an EMDR therapist is knowing when a client is ready for trauma processing—and when it’s best to pause and focus on preparation first. I often refer to preparation as the work before the work. While the signs are not fully comprehensive, it is a starting point to guide your decision-making.

Here are some consideration to help guide your clinical decision-making:

✅ Signs Your Client is Ready for EMDR Processing:
✔ They have a stable, safe environment outside of therapy
✔ They can tolerate some emotional discomfort without becoming overwhelmed
✔ They have basic coping skills to manage distress (or can engage in resourcing)
✔ They express motivation to process trauma with your support
✔ Education has been provided, fears addressed
✔ Timing considerations have been discussed, especially for the first reprocessing session
✔ A support system is in place
✔ Any pending legal issues/cases have been discussed

⏳ When to Pause & Prioritize Preparation:
⚠ They are in an active crisis or experiencing ongoing trauma
⚠ They become emotionally flooded when discussing past experiences
⚠ Unable to demonstrate the ability to emotionally state change
⚠ They lack grounding or self-regulation skills
⚠ They don’t have external support or feel unsafe in their daily life

🌱 Preparation Before Trauma Processing
If a client isn’t quite ready, focus on Phase 2 of EMDR: Preparation—building stabilization skills, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation before moving into reprocessing. Remember, slower is faster when it comes to trauma healing.

I encourage you to use consultation for support and guidance. This post is not meant to replace consultation.

❓“I don’t know… I guess a 5?” Some clients find the Subjective Units of Distress (SUD) scale confusing or abstract. How do you help them track their shifts? Visuals? Metaphors? Let’s swap ideas! Comment below!🔽

To my fellow therapists: 💙

You hold space for deep healing. You guide clients through their hardest moments. You witness transformation—but also pain. And that takes a lot out of you.

Remember: Your well-being fuels the work you do. Prioritize your own nervous system. Move your body, set boundaries, rest deeply. Your well-being matters just as much as your clients’.
