Traditional copper POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) lines are being phased out. NFPA 72 still requires reliable communication paths for fire alarm systems—but what "reliable" now means has shifted.

Dual-path supervision (or a single path with very strong performance) with failure detection within 5 minutes.
24-hour backup power + enough battery for alarm transmission.
Continuous line fault supervision & timely alerts.
Performance equal to or better than traditional POTS.
UL-listing where required.
