Haleakalā Biochar

Storm prep at the base yard. This giant, “standing dead” Tasmanian Blue Gum eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) was threatening our kilns, so we said, “Tiiiimmmmbbberrrr.”

We will use every bit of this tree to improve Kula’s soils, making biochar, woodchips, and log erosion barriers to assist in nearby watershed protection projects within our ahupua’a of Pūlehunui, including right here on site.

As many of you saw in our last post, due to Hurricane Lala, we’re currently unable to access our kiln, which means our biochar production is temporarily on hold. In the meantime, your Living Brews purchases are providing important support for our small Maui-based business (and our retail partner in Kula!) and allowing us to keep producing locally made tools for healthier soils, stronger plants, and more resilient landscapes.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone choosing to support local circular economies—and especially products created with Maui’s soil and ecological health in mind.

Order online here: https://www.haleakalabiochar.com/shop

Or place your order directly with Kula Hardware & Nursery before the deadline.

Freshly brewed. Made on Maui. Supporting the Life of the Land. See you in September!

Thank you to everyone who submitted abstracts for the North American Biochar Conference. The agenda is shaping up to be ✨ incredible ✨

First up in our session spotlight: Charles Hegberg's “Rebuilding the Urban Water Cycle: Biochar’s Role in Soil Modification, and Infiltration/Storage Modeling for Stormwater Resilience”

Across the United States, compacted soils, turf, swales, filter strips, and aging facilities often shed runoff rather than provide infiltration, storage, and filtration. 💦 This session reframes biochar-based soil restoration as a strategy for restoring the small terrestrial water cycle in developed landscapes.

Pencil this in if you're a stormwater and green infrastructure professional, engineer, or a consultant / contractor working in this space.

More details, more session insights, and the preliminary agenda will be coming soon -- so keep an eye out.

Post-Lala damage assessment: Haleakalā Biochar on Crater Road in Kula will remain closed until our team can clear vehicle access to our kiln and base yard - nearly 40 eucalyptus trees that fell in the storm are blocking access. We are grateful that our facility sustained minor damage and our team is currently focused on helping in areas where the needs are greater than ours.
