Engstrom Vineyards Catch updates on vineyard happenings throughout the season Our current focus is developing the grape vines to full maturity and producing high quality fruit.

A glimpse into our journey to raise 1560 cold climate grapevines and grow a family on our country homestead outside of La Crosse, Wisconsin. This has proven to be a challenge given the unpredictable Midwestern climate, but we are hopeful for the future after experiencing two minimally successful harvests. For the past two years our grapes have been crafted into local wines made by Elmaro Vineyards

(specifically the La Crescent and St Pepin varietals). We are not currently functioning as a retail winery, but John has been perfecting his home wine making recipes with great results! His Frontenac Rosé has been a favorite!

Here's a good description from the weather page:

This is called a "fire rainbow", or more scientifically - a "circumhorizontal arc".
They occur when the sun is high in the sky and the sunlight gets refracted through tiny ice crystals in the high altitude, wispy cirrus clouds that you can see in the photo.☀️🌈

It was perfect weather to work in the vineyard this weekend and the bugs seemed to stay away too with the light breeze. The kids were a huge help with mowing and cutting off suckers (the shoots that start growing along the trunks that steal nutrients from the the fruit). We worked on a little training too (tucking the vines into the wires to keep them is the best position for optimal growth).

It will take many more hours of pruning over the next few months to get the plants ready to take off with new growth for the 2026 season.

This summer and growing season passed by in a flash, and just as quickly we made it the to end of our harvest for 2023, finishing with the Petite Pearl grapes today! So thankful for the great friends and family that helped us pick about 7000 lbs total for the season. ❤️ Hoping to turn some of that into our own wine label...coming in 2024. 🎉
