"She was only going to get the mail."

Twenty minutes later, a neighbor walked your mom home from two streets over.

The Alzheimer's Association says six in 10 people living with dementia will wander at least once. Many do it more than once.

There's usually a reason behind it. She might be restless, hungry, looking for the bathroom, or searching for something familiar.

Ideas that help:
→ Plan activities for her most restless time of day (often early evening)
→ Check basic needs first: bathroom, food, water
→ Give her real jobs, like folding towels or watering plants
→ Keep car keys out of sight if driving isn't safe
→ Skip crowded, noisy places that can overwhelm her

Make a plan now for what you'd do if she did leave. If someone is missing, call 911.

It's 5 p.m. and Mom asks where her own mother is.

She's pacing. She says she wants to "go home," while sitting in the house she's lived in for 40 years.

The Alzheimer's Association calls this sundowning: increased confusion, anxiety, and agitation that can build from dusk into the night.

What often helps:
☀️ Daylight and activity earlier in the day
📅 Appointments in the morning or early afternoon
🌙 Soft, steady lighting as the sun goes down
☕ Less caffeine, and shorter naps if nights are rough
🎵 A calm evening routine: music, a snack, a familiar show

Keep a quick note of what happened before a hard evening. Patterns show up sooner than you'd expect.
If evenings keep getting harder, bring it up with your parent's doctor.
