One of the first books I often suggest business owners read is The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Ge**er.

It explains a challenge many entrepreneurs experience.

People often start businesses because they are good at something.

A great mechanic opens a repair shop.
A talented baker starts a bakery.
A skilled consultant launches a firm.

But being good at the work doesn’t automatically mean you know how to run a business that does that work.

Ge**er explains that every business owner operates in three roles:

✔ Technician – doing the work
✔ Manager – organizing systems
✔ Entrepreneur – thinking about the future

The challenge is that many owners spend most of their time as the technician.

They are working in the business instead of building the systems that allow the business to grow.

One of the most common things I see with business owners is this:

Everyone gets paid except the owner.

The employees get paid.
The vendors get paid.
The bills get paid.

And the owner waits to see what’s left.

The traditional formula most businesses use is:

Sales – Expenses = Profit

But expenses often expand to use whatever money comes in.

The book Profit First suggests flipping the formula:

Sales – Profit = Expenses

Instead of profit being the leftover, it becomes the priority.

When revenue comes in, a portion is set aside for profit and owner pay first.

Then the business operates with the remaining money.

It’s a simple change, but it creates a powerful shift.

Because a business should work for the owner, not the other way around.

Had a great time speaking yesterday at the Lunch B.I.T.E.S. Seminar hosted by the Hondo Economic Development Corporation.

Have you ever bought a car and then suddenly noticed that same car everywhere?

At stoplights.
In parking lots.
Driving down the road.

Before you bought it, you barely noticed it.

But after you made the decision, it feels like everyone else owns one too.

Did everyone suddenly buy the same car?

No.

Your brain simply started noticing it.

This happens because of something called the Reticular Activating System (RAS)—a filter in your brain that decides what deserves your attention.

Once something becomes important to you, your brain starts highlighting it everywhere.

The same thing happens with goals.

When you clearly define what you want, you begin noticing ideas, opportunities, and conversations that move you closer to that goal.

As Tony Robbins often says:

“Where focus goes, energy flows.”

So here’s a question for today:

What are you focusing on right now?

Because what you focus on… you start seeing everywhere.

Great customer service isn’t just about having scripts—it’s about understanding people and knowing how to adapt in the moment.

Really enjoyed working with my client, Harrison's Landing, during an intro to BANK Fundamentals + Customer Service.

This was all about awareness and practice—and you could see the lightbulbs going off.

Have you ever watched a pot of water heat on the stove?

You turn the burner on and wait.

Nothing happens at first.

One minute… nothing.
Two minutes… nothing.
Three minutes… still nothing.

But beneath the surface, the temperature is rising.

Energy is building.

Eventually the water reaches its boiling point and suddenly the pot is full of bubbles.

What looked like nothing happening… was actually progress the whole time.

This is a great example of a concept used in business called perturbation.

When we introduce change—new systems, new strategies, new habits—results often take time to appear.

And this is the moment when many people quit.

Because they don’t see immediate results, they assume the effort isn’t working and they quit.

But those who stay consistent long enough eventually reach the breakthrough.

Sometimes the only difference between quitting and succeeding is simply keeping the heat on long enough for the water to boil.
