Lac Du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians The Band has inhabited the Lac du Flambeau area for countless generations.

The Band acquired the name Lac du Flambeau from its gathering practice of harvesting fish at night by torchlight. The name Lac du Flambeau, or Lake of the Torches, refers to this practice and was given to the Band by the French traders and trappers who visited the area. The Ojibwe call themselves Anishinabe (Original Man) and the place they live Waswaagoning (Place Where They Fish with Birch Bark Torches). The Lac du Flambeau Reservation was officially established by treaties in 1837 and 1842. The area was continually logged in the following years and became a tourist destination for families from southern Wisconsin and Illinois around the turn of the century. Today the People of Waswaagoning continue centuries old traditions and hold fast to their cultural beliefs, while striving to incorporate the best of 21st century offerings into their daily lives.

🎡 Wild Rice Carnival wristband vouchers are available for LDF youth!

Starting today, vouchers can be picked up at the William Wildcat Tribal Center Sept. 16–18 from 12–4 PM. Parents/guardians can sign at pickup.

🎟️ LUHS/LDF High School students will receive vouchers at school.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the survivors, first responders, service members, and families whose lives were forever changed.

Waaswaaganing joins communities across the nation in reflection and remembrance. May we continue to carry forward the courage, compassion, and unity shown during one of our country’s darkest moments.

Our annual Wild Rice Fest is right around the corner! Next weekend will be packed with activities for the whole family, including the carnival, 5K, bag toss tournament, youth 3-on-3 basketball tournament, powwow, and much more!

A Referendum Election will be held to approve or deny the proposed new Election Code. This code affects every Tribal Member, so we strongly encourage everyone to come out and vote!

If you have questions about the proposed changes, copies of the new Election Code will be available at the Tribal Center, where voting will take place.

Some of the proposed changes include updates to election hours, voter-list requirements, candidate qualifications, recounts, election contests, referendum ties, constitutional elections and Election Board procedures.

⏰ Polls are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Tribal Center and Tribal Programs will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026 in honor of Labor Day!
