Teams often want to use assessments to support leadership and team development.

Sometimes they come with a specific tool already in mind because they've used it before or heard good things about it.

But too often, the assessment is chosen before the team is clear on the problem they're trying to solve.

The reports arrive. The debrief sparks great conversation. Then, the results end up in a folder because they were never connected to a meaningful objective or next step.

We approach assessments a little differently.

To us, an assessment isn't the intervention. It's information that helps guide the intervention.

Before selecting one, we encourage leaders to ask a few questions:

β€’ What problem are we trying to solve?
β€’ Is this a people challenge or a systems challenge?
β€’ What decisions will we make differently because of what we learn?
β€’ Are we committed to acting on the insights?

We use a variety of assessments depending on the question we're trying to answer and the challenge our clients are trying to solve. Here's a simple guide to help you think about which tool might fit your situation.

Remember, the real value isn't in the assessment you choose. It's in the conversations, commitments, and actions that follow. The best debriefs we've facilitated didn't end with a report. They ended with agreement on one or two changes to be put into practice immediately, and with follow up to sustain the change.

Which leadership assessment has created the most lasting change for you or your team, and what made the difference?

Is your team stuck circling the same conversation? πŸ”

Dial in how you decide, not just what you decide.

πŸ’  Clarify intent. Are we making a decision β€” or just sharing information?

πŸ’  Use a decision framework. The specific framework matters less than you think. What matters is that everyone understands it and is committed to it.

πŸ’  Get decision-making roles crystal clear. Who decides? Who's consulted? Who just needs to know?

πŸ’  State the decision out loud to confirm agreement. Confirm understanding. Don't let people leave the room assuming different things.

Great teams don't just have great ideas β€” they have great decision hygiene.

Which of these is your team missing? πŸ‘‡

Is your team stuck in the same meeting on repeat? πŸ”

You know the one. Same topic, different week. Everyone leaves with a slightly different idea of what was "decided."

Two weeks later, you're back where you started.

Here's the fix: dial in how you decide, not just what you decide.

πŸ’  Clarify intent. Are you actually making a decision β€” or just sharing information? Conflating the two is where most circular meetings begin.

πŸ’  Use a decision framework. The specific framework matters less than you think. What matters is that everyone understands it and is committed to it.

πŸ’  Get decision-making roles crystal clear. Who decides? Who's consulted? Who just needs to know? Ambiguity here is a silent killer of momentum.

πŸ’  State the decision out loud. Say it back. Confirm agreement. Confirm understanding. Don't let people leave the room assuming different things.

Great teams don't just have great ideas β€” they have great decision hygiene.

Which of these is your team missing? πŸ‘‡

Making the move from Manager to Director in state government?

Here's where to focus first.

While the transition to Director means taking on more responsibility, succeeding in the role requires a different way of leading.

Many new Directors discover that the skills that earned them the promotion aren't the same skills that will help them thrive in the role.

Here are four ways leaders need to lead differently to succeed at the Director level and beyond:

1. Delegation. Shifting from doing the work to creating the conditions for others to succeed.

2. Giving meaningful feedback. Developing people, not just evaluating performance.

3. Influencing across the organization. Building alignment across priorities, stakeholders, and teams without relying solely on authority.

4. Strategic prioritization. Knowing where to focus when everything feels important.

Strong Directors don't just deliver results.

They build the capacity of their teams and organizations to deliver results over the long term.

Which of these leadership shifts do you think is the most challenging?
