BackYard Sapphire Glass Recycling

BackYard Sapphire Glass Recycling BackYard Sapphire is a grassroots movement towards sustainability and making our footprints smaller. Using glass mulch reduces w**d growth.
(1)

It compacts in our sized layers and keeps the w**ds that do root to a minimum and towards the surface, so they are easier to pull. It doesn't blow away with a leaf blower. It doesn't hold moisture and get mildewy and moldy.

"In chapel on the Cade campus, we welcomed three local women whose efforts illustrate this year’s Women’s History Month theme, "Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future."

Sarah Trotter and Kelsey Leger are the owners of Five Mile Eatery, a restaurant in Lafayette’s Oil Center that offers organic, vegetarian, and locally-sourced dishes. Sarah and Kelsey follow sustainable practices as they create what they call “Feel Good Food” for our local community.

Also joining our panel was Dawn Vincent of Backyard Sapphire Glass Recycling. Dawn and co-founder Tina Crapsi created this nonprofit, grass roots organization to offer recycling options for materials that are no longer accepted in local government recycling programs. They turn the recycled glass into sand and mulch that can be used for landscaping and other projects.

All of these women stepped up to provide something they felt was lacking in the Acadiana community, and had to challenge common perceptions of how things were done in their industries. As they described their journeys, they advised our students to invest in themselves, to follow their passions and face their fears, and to be aware of how their choices impact the people, community, and environment around them.

ESA juniors and Eco Club leaders Chloe Heumann and Amelie Gomez interviewed our guests, and science department chair Christina Hidalgo moderated the panel. Thank you to Sarah, Kelsey, and Dawn for sharing your stories with ESA students!"

Thank you, ESA for the opportunity to share our mission with your students!

Curious about the backdrop on our stage? ESA Fine Arts presents "Godspell" next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and the crew has been designing, building, and painting the sets. Details at the link in our bio.

Incredible!

Incredible!

Beads. Throws. King cake. And… elephants? 🐘

During Mardi Gras in Lafayette, crews collected 20+ TONS of trash via Acadiana Waste Services, LLC waste receptacles along the parade route — that’s roughly the weight of four adult elephants!

Now that’s a BIG clean-up.

Huge thanks to our partners, staff, and to everyone who helped ensure trash made its way into bins instead of our streets and waterways!
