We flew to Kaua‘i to visit my parents and found ourselves in the middle of Hurricane Lowell on Monday, September 7th.
Thank you to everyone who has checked in, sent love, and prayed for our family. We are safe. My parents’ home made it through, although several large trees were uprooted or split in half.
We are among the many families still without power. Thankfully, we still have running water, just no hot water, and my mom’s gas stove has allowed us to cook.
A family friend shared their backup generator with us, so we’ve been able to keep the refrigerator and freezer running. In return, we shared water with them.
In the day, we focus on cleanup and repair on my parents’ land. At night, we go to sleep when it gets dark or read by flashlight and candlelight.
An abundance of ruby red grapefruit fell from a tree that didn’t survive the hurricane, Zoe made a “FREE GRAPEFRUIT” sign and placed bags outside for neighbors to take.
These small exchanges of food, water, power, care, and generosity have reminded me how people show up for one another in times of crisis.
While our family is safe, other parts of this beautiful island have been deeply impacted.
Homes, farms, roads, power lines, and small businesses have been damaged. Thousands of people have been without power and water, and many families are facing a much harder road to recovery.

Continue supporting Kaua‘i’s locally owned businesses. Buy a gift card, place an online order, book a future visit, or share their work.
If you already have plans to visit in the immediate future, please check with your accommodations and consider postponing while the island’s limited resources are focused on local families.
Kaua‘i is more than a beautiful place to visit. It is our second home with our family and community we love.
Please keep this island and everyone who calls it home in your prayers. And if you’re able, please give, share, and support 🌺
