The ATF announced Friday that it will no longer require federal NFA approval or registration for suppressors, short-barreled ri**es, short-barreled sh****ns and certain other weapons.
Effective immediately, the policy applies nationwide, not just to the gun owners covered by an earlier federal court ruling.
The change follows Congress reducing the NFA making and transfer taxes on those items to $0 and a federal judge ruling against the remaining registration requirements.
Machine guns and destructive devices are NOT included. Federal background checks and prohibited-person restrictions remain, as do applicable state and local laws. Interstate transport requirements also remain for short-barreled ri**es and sh****ns.
This is an ATF enforcement-policy change, not a repeal of the NFA itself.
