As part of the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union fellowship, we traveled through Southern Colorado, Northern New Mexico, and the Navajo Nation (Diné Bikéyah). We met with farmers, ranchers, native seed producers, and agricultural business owners to learn about their work, history, and experiences.

What truly inspired us was seeing how individuals across the region are building projects and businesses while working with their communities to create local impact.

We're grateful for the chance to connect, share knowledge, and deepen relationships with those doing this work every day.

Thanks to RMFU for this incredible opportunity!

When we look at how soil health affects productivity, it helps to compare systems with microbes, compost, and ground cover to those with exposed soil.

Organic matter in compost helps retain moisture in the soil. As microbes break down sugars, carbohydrates, and minerals, they slowly build humidified material that further improves water-holding capacity and soil structure. Keeping the soil surface shaded, using mulch or the shade from living plants, helps keep evaporation to a minimum and the soil surface cool.

Bringing together organic matter from compost, active microbes, and consistent ground cover creates an environment that supports water retention and improves soil structure. The result is often reduced water usage and higher yields over time.

Alternatively, in the absence of microbes, compost, or ground cover, water evaporates much more quickly and surface temperatures increase. This can cause the soil to dry out, microbial life to diminish, and the physical characteristics of the soil to change. In clay soils especially, the surface can compact and crack, due to reduced flocculation—a chemical process that helps maintain proper soil structure by keeping elements within the soil bound together.

When the soil is collapsed, the surface of the soil can become impenetrable as clay particles stack on top of themselves, creating a hard crust that causes water pooling, runoff, and erosion. Maintaining healthy structured soil is critical for opening pore space and allowing water move deeper into the ground.

Watch for our next tip on building healthy, productive soils.

The TerraPod is designed to harness locally adapted microorganisms that restore important ecological functions in your soil. The microbial community grown in the TerraPod is based on the same beneficial soil organisms found in healthy, productive fields. Our goal is to help farmers cultivate a customized living soil microbiome that can establish and persist in the field, rather than just providing a product that sits on a shelf.

If you want to improve the soil health of your farm and think the TerraPod might help you, get in touch with us. If you'd like to learn more about our bioreactor, feel free to ask us any questions. We're here to help!

Our team visited a coffee farm in Brazil a few weeks ago, and what stood out the most about this client’s management was their long-term adaptive mindset that has been integrated into each of their practices. Thinking 10+ years into the future about what challenges they will face is helping them take the right steps to take care of their farm today.

Even though they are achieving productive yields and high-quality products, they are still looking to improve, which is why we will be supporting them to build a biological program. We are excited to help them take those next steps!

Most farmers spend thousands diagnosing above-ground crop problems like pests, disease, and weather stress. But many issues start below the surface: with declining soil health.

In this post we break down 5 warning signs your soil health is declining. If you recognize these signs, it may be time to focus on restoring your soil’s ecosystem to boost crop performance and achieve long-term results.

👉 Learn how to rebuild your soil health and take back control of your farm’s ecosystem in our most recent blog post: https://tr.ee/iJbt6DtyaE
