Most farmers spend thousands diagnosing above-ground crop problems like pests, disease, and weather stress. But many issues start below the surface: with declining soil health.

In this post we break down 5 warning signs your soil health is declining. If you recognize these signs, it may be time to focus on restoring your soil鈥檚 ecosystem to boost crop performance and achieve long-term results.

馃憠 Learn how to rebuild your soil health and take back control of your farm鈥檚 ecosystem in our most recent blog post: https://tr.ee/iJbt6DtyaE

It鈥檚 been an eventful beginning of the year for Terraforma.

Here鈥檚 a glimpse 馃憖 of some of the activities we鈥檝e been doing for the past three months:

1 & 2: We shipped 100+ bags of compost to some of our clients in Colorado, Iowa and Nebraska. We are getting ready to ship more (let us know if you or someone you know could be interested).

3 & 4: We attended the High Planes No-Till Conference in Burlington, CO, where we talked about our work to multiple farmers. Miles, our co-founder, was also invited to speak about SAP analysis.

5: We got accepted to the Fellowship Program and we attended the first in-person meeting of the year in Denver, CO. We are grateful for all the information shared, the honest conversations and to be part of this amazing cohort. We are thrilled for what鈥檚 to come!

Stay tuned for more exciting updates.

Conference season may be behind us, but the conversations and connections are still fresh in our minds. 馃尵

We鈥檙e feeling incredibly grateful for all the passionate folks we met, the conversations we had, and the chance to share the work that gets us excited every single day.

If you didn鈥檛 catch us live, no worries鈥攚e鈥檝e got something for you! Our talk on Nutrient Cycling, featuring Terraforma co-founder Miles Sorel, is now up on our YouTube channel. It was recorded at the 2025 Roots of Western Colorado Soil Health, Food & Farm Forum and dives into some of the key concepts of we love teaching to growers.

Special thanks to the amazing team at the Western Colorado Soil Health, Food & Farm Forum, and Drew Loewen for bringing it to life on screen, and Montrose County for making it all possible.

For those looking to dive even deeper, the complete forum recordings are available at soilfoodfarm.org/register for $30. It鈥檚 a valuable resource featuring expert insights on soil health, regenerative practices, and the future of sustainable agriculture.

The owner of a conventional grape farm in Peru, searching for alternative ways to boost productivity, recognized the critical role of soil health and reached out to us for support. A devastating flood had severely impacted their yields, setting off long-term ripple effects that prevented them from meeting their production goals and put their farm at risk. Since traditional agricultural management seemed to make the problem worse, they began to explore sustainable practices to address the root cause of their declining yields.

This project presented multiple challenges鈥攈igh rot feeding nematode pressure, extremely sandy soil, and calcareous water. By implementing practices with a measured, data-driven approach, we successfully tackled these issues. Over three years, we executed a strategic plan focused on improving yields by building soil organic matter and reestablishing the plant鈥檚 microbial connections.

We saw a quick turnaround with remarkable results: yields improved significantly, we surpassed the previous all-time productivity record, and production costs decreased thanks to the in-house production of multiple organic inputs and solutions.

The first image of this post captures the farm during our initial visit, while the following two, taken one and three years later, showcase the farm鈥檚 transformation after implementing tailored, science-backed solutions.

Seeing the farm thrive again after years of struggle was a proud moment for us and the owner. Have you faced similar challenges? Let us know in the comments or reach out through the link in our bio.
