Find out what premium shears should feel like. If you’ve been duped into overpaying for shears that falsely claim to be Japanese-made, think about upgrading to a less expensive but higher quality shear. Reach out today for a demo.

Sometimes, you truly don't know how good a pair of scissors is until you try it out for yourself.

Here's a quick video to answer one of the top sharpening questions I get: "Do I need to sharpen these?"

Here is a perhaps the primary question I get about sharpening, and a quick and easy test to see if your blades are dull and where.

How many stylists have kitchen knives that are rusting? I’d be willing to bet that none of their “good” knives (wustoff, victorionox, shun etc) have rust spots.

Why tolerate it on your shears?

Shears need to hold an edge and should be designed to bear up under the stringent sanitation req’s you’re under. Rust spots on your shears mean you’ve either been super negligent by leaving them in acid for days or your shears use cheap metal and the company is lying about their quality and origin.

Lately I’ve been seeing a distressing amount of high-cost shears that are nearly seized-up at the pivots and full of rust spots on the blade. A good sharpener can help with rust and discoloration, but please be careful buying from folks who claim high-end steel but who won’t include markings on the shear that show country of origin. Esp the folks who are pushing shears made in China for less than $10 and selling them for north of $1000.

Hang tough, stay safe, trust-but-verify.

Want to see a high-cost, shabby-quality shear? Here ya go.

Want a high quality shear? Look inside. High-end Japanese metal, high-end bearing.

If you’re a stylist running Hanzos with the ball-bearing (like the HHVs) check the pivot bearing. I’ve had several recently with seized up bearings, two that wear basically rust-welded to the blade.

Seems that they are using bearings that just don’t have a very good seal, so super important to keep them lubricated. You absolutely cannot dunk them. One of the sets I worked on were only a year old and only sprayed at the end of every day. Crazy.

Let me know if you could use an oiler. I’ve got some I can give out and show you how to protect your investment until you can upgrade.

Here’s some photos of a year old HHV-6.5 vs a set of 5yr old high-quality shears with high-end bearings.

All bearings can rust. But it sure as heck shouldn’t be this fast.

Cheers

Our texture shears cut so smoothly that they don't leave behind any lines or notches -- unlike anything else in this industry.
