Last but definitely not least on our marathon tour is University of Pennsylvania, a selective Ivy League school of 10,000 in the heart of Philly. The oldest college in the country, students apply to one of four colleges: Arts & Science, Wharton Business, Engineering, or Nursing, but all programs are interdisciplinary by design. Students can minor in any college. A favorite tradition on campus is Toast Throwing
at the homecoming football game, where thousands of fans hurl toast onto the field at the end of the third quarter as a literal interpretation of "a toast to dear old Penn" song!

Co-op programs immediately come to mind when you think of Drexel University, a school of 13,000 in urban Philly! Co-ops are typically paid jobs so students don’t pay tuition at that time. Students can choose one 6-month co-op in 4 years or three 6-month co-ops in 5 years, oftentimes leading to employment. Direct entry nursing, Engineering and Business are popular. The amazing Westphal College of Media Arts & Design is truly impressive in the depth and breadth of its offerings - Architecture,
Music Industry, Product Design and Game Design and Production are just some of its majors.

Students at Lehigh University, a beautiful and hilly mid-sized school of 6,000, enter as “undecided” in one of four school - Arts & Science, Engineering, Business, and Health. But their interdisciplinary approach is what stands out. Students can apply for programs like IBE (Integrated Business & Engineering), CSB (Computer Science & Business), IDEAS (Integrated Degree in Engineering & Arts & Sciences). The red doors on every building at Muhlenberg College highlight the welcoming hospitality of the community, and that Caring College mantra permeates campus! Well known for Performing Arts (possible to double major), Pre-Med (with numerous early assurance programs, and Business (specifically finance and accounting). Among the rolling hills of Pennsylvania sits the stunning campus of Bucknell University. It’s 3,900 students choose between Business, Engineering, or Arts & Science when they apply. Mentorship by faculty and alums is ongoing and the community is extremely tight-knit. The cute town of Lewisburg is walking distance, providing a fun distraction and community events in which students participate. The candlelight ceremony at the beginning and end of college is a favorite student tradition. I had such fun connecting with one of my students, who is studying chemical engineering:)!

WE ARE…PENN STATE! This chant exemplifies the pride surrounding Pennsylvania’s flagship university. Everything is on a grand scale: Beaver Stadium is the 4th largest in the world, the alumni network of 788,000 is the largest in the world, and they are the the second largest city in PA on game days! Programs of note are the Schreyer Honor College, Smeel Business School, especially their supply chain management program, the competitive nursing program, Pre-Vet and Agricultural school, and the architecture program. Ben & Jerry even took an ice cream-making class here. I did could not leave without a scoop for myself!

Dickinson College, founded in 1773, is the 16th oldest college in the country! It’s 2,400 undergrads receive “an education without an expiration date!” A global education is embedded in every aspect of learning, with an amazing 13 languages offered and a sustainability requirement. The school runs its own 50-acre certified organic farm, which feeds much of the student body while providing programs in sustainable agricultural. Dickinson has its own law school and offers an accelerated 3-3 program. International Business & Management is the most popular major, but one-third of students are STEM majors/minors.

Gettysburg College’s fabulous history adds to the appeal of this small liberal arts college of 2,200. Founded just before the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Hall became a hospital for soldiers of the North and South! Unique programs include the Eisenhower Institute, Civil War Institute, Sunderman Music Conservatory, Center for Public Policy, and the Garthwait Leadership Experience. A noted tradition is the first year walk to the battlefield where the Gettysburg Address is read.

Villanova’s campus was bustling today despite the tornado warnings! Its 7,500 undergrads choose between Business, Nursing, Engineering, or Arts & Science, and double majors are popular. All freshman business majors become Bloomberg certified. The schools just purchased Cabrini and Rosemont Colleges, and will be increasing enrollment in the next four years. And who can forget their most famous alum, Pope Leo!!!
