Educators: don't forget this if you haven't filed already.

Save your receipts! The IRS is reminding teachers and other educators that they'll be able to deduct up to $300 of out-of-pocket classroom expenses—or $600 per married couple if you're both educators—for the tax year 2022 (the return you'll file in 2023).

And don't forget that the deduction is above-the-line, sometimes called an adjustment to income, so you don't have to itemize to take advantage. Currently, you'll find the deduction on Schedule 1, Part 2, line 11 (see below).

The deduction was previously $250. This is the first time the limit has increased since it was introduced in 2002.

The IRS estimates that nine in 10 taxpayers take the standard deduction - but this year you can take a deduction for charitable contributions without itemizing - $300 for single filers & $600 for married filing jointly. The article below digs deeper into this subject or you can get in touch with us for more info.

Recent changes in the tax regulations to help ease the burdens of the pandemic could lead to lower tax bills at filing time for some Americans. The new benefits allow taxpayers who do not itemize to take advantage of donations to charity—at least for a while.

We are halfway through the year and now is a great time to have your employees check their withholding to make sure there are no tax surprises next April 15th. If a taxpayer has had any life changes like gotten married, divorced, had a baby or adopted a child they may want to change their withholding for the 2nd half of the year.
