When a flood happens, water can make its way through the cracks and gaps between hardwood floorboards and get underneath the flooring. Once that moisture gets trapped below, the wood can absorb it and begin to swell, causing what’s called cupping, where the edges of the boards start to curl upward.

This is why hardwood floors can be especially difficult to dry after a flood. Finding that moisture underneath the flooring and using the right drying techniques early on can help minimize the damage and give the hardwood the best chance of being saved.

We’re not a demolition company — our goal is actually to minimize how much needs to be removed in the first place. When water damage happens, we use different drying techniques, equipment, and moisture monitoring to focus on drying the materials that can be saved.

Sometimes removal is necessary, but we don’t want to tear things out just because they got wet. The more we can properly dry and save, the less damage there is to repair and the easier the rebuild can be.

It doesn’t take much for a pipe leak to turn into a major water damage problem. A small crack, a loose connection, or a pipe freezing during the colder months can send water into walls, ceilings, floors, and places you may not notice right away.

With winter on the way, it’s a good time to keep an eye on your pipes and know who to call if something does happen. If you ever come home to a leak or find water where it shouldn’t be, keep us in mind.

We showed our tenting technique in a previous post, but here’s another look at how it’s working on these hardwood floors. Hardwood can be especially difficult to dry when water gets underneath the flooring, so concentrating the airflow underneath the boards can make a big difference.

Our infrared camera is already showing us changes across the flooring as the drying process continues. Along with moisture readings, this gives us another way to monitor the progress and make sure we’re heading in the right direction.

One of the biggest things we tell homeowners who want to prevent basement flooding is to look at the home’s waterproofing system. Heavy rain can put a lot of water around your foundation, and without a proper system in place, that water can eventually find its way into your basement.

A properly installed waterproofing system, such as a French drain, can help collect and direct water away from where it can cause problems. Taking care of the water before it gets into your basement can save you from dealing with a much bigger mess later on.

Hardwood flooring can be tricky when it gets wet, especially because moisture can get underneath the boards where you can’t see it. On this job, we’re using a drying technique called tenting. The plastic is carefully set up over the affected area and sealed around the edges, allowing us to direct airflow underneath the tent and focus the drying process where the moisture is trapped.

We monitor the moisture levels throughout the process to track the progress and make sure the flooring is actually drying, not just feeling dry on the surface. The goal is to remove the moisture properly and save as much of the existing hardwood as possible.

With all the heavy rainfall we’ve been getting, we’ve had a lot more emergency calls coming in for flooded basements, leaks, and water getting into homes.
