CALL 911
FOR WHO?

The laughter started with the dog.

Titan lay beneath Arthur Kane’s stool inside a small roadside diner, his once-black muzzle silver with age.

Arthur was seventy.

Titan was almost thirteen.

Together, they looked harmless.

That was enough to entertain Mason Rourke.

“Well, look at these two.”

His three friends turned from the booth behind him.

Mason pointed from Arthur to Titan.

“Which one's older?”

The men burst out laughing.

Arthur continued eating his breakfast.

Titan barely raised his eyes.

One of Mason’s friends crouched slightly and whistled.

“Hey, grandpa.”

He wasn't talking to Arthur.

The men laughed again.

Then the man pushed Titan’s metal water bowl away with his boot.

CLANG.

Water spilled across the floor.

Titan looked at it.

Then at Arthur.

Arthur’s fork stopped.

Mason noticed.

“Aw. Did we hurt his feelings?”

He stepped closer.

“Maybe you two should be in the same retirement home.”

More laughter.

Arthur placed his coffee cup down.

Clink.

The waitress behind the counter stopped moving.

She knew Arthur.

And she knew Titan.

Mason didn't.

Arthur finally raised his eyes.

“Call 911.”

Silence.

For one second.

Then Mason laughed harder than before.

“For who?”

Arthur didn't answer.

Mason leaned closer and reached toward Arthur’s shoulder.

Titan immediately rose.

Not with a bark.

Not with exposed teeth.

The old German Shepherd simply stepped between Mason and Arthur.

Perfect position.

Perfect control.

Mason’s hand stopped.

Arthur said quietly:

“Titan. Hold.”

The dog froze.

One of Mason’s friends stopped laughing.

Then another.

Mason looked down at Titan.

“You gonna let that thing threaten me?”

Arthur's expression didn't change.

“No.”

“Then what was ‘call 911’ supposed to mean?”

Arthur stared at him.

“You wouldn't understand.”

That irritated Mason more than any threat could have.

He scoffed and stepped back.

“Crazy old man.”

Arthur rested one hand against Titan’s neck.

Immediately the dog relaxed.

Mason and his friends headed for the door.

Then Arthur saw the lettering across the back of Mason’s leather vest.

ROURKE CONSTRUCTION GROUP.

Everything inside Arthur stopped.

Twelve years earlier, another Rourke name had been written across the report that ended his life as he knew it.

The Rourke Center collapse.

Six trapped workers.

One missing rescue handler.

Arthur’s only son.

David Kane.

Arthur slowly looked down at Titan.

The dog had entered that building with David.

Only Titan came back.

Outside, Mason crossed the parking lot.

Titan suddenly stood again.

His ears lifted.

Then the old dog began to whine.

Arthur frowned.

He knew that sound.

Titan used to make it whenever David’s truck turned onto their street.

Not after David died.

Not once.

For twelve years.

Arthur whispered:

“Titan?”

The dog pulled toward the door.

Hard.

Arthur followed his gaze.

Mason Rourke was opening his truck.

Titan pulled again.

Arthur felt something cold move through his chest.

The name Rourke had returned.

And somehow...

Titan recognized something with it.
