It’s Friday. Most people love Fridays. Not me, not since 99 weeks ago when my world was shattered and changed forever. 99 Fridays ago, I woke up to find my baby boy who surrendered his life only 6 days after his 15th birthday. On Sunday, I will lead Team Shane in his honor. I incessantly ask for donations to raise funds to try to prevent anyone else from experiencing this kind of tragedy. STORY TIME…..PLEASE READ.

The brightest smiles can mask the deepest pain…. Today is World Mental Health Day. Mental health is greatly misunderstood. Because access to quality mental healthcare is so limited, and because of the stigma attached, mental health diagnoses are so hard to come by. Even then, people are often misdiagnosed or dismissed. Did you know that just 3 weeks prior to Shane’s su***de, at his request, we brought him to the hospital for evaluation and after just a few hours, he was released after the psychiatrist stated, ‘he is not a danger to himself or anyone else- just get him back into regular therapy and he’ll be fine.’ It took nearly 4 weeks to get an appointment with a new therapist, and while we were waiting, despite my asking him EVERY SINGLE DAY if he was ok, and him assuring me that he was, Shane decided that he couldn’t wait any longer. December 2, 2021 at 3:30 pm we were supposed to be meeting with his new therapist. Instead, we were at his memorial service. When I ask for donations it’s because the mental healthcare system FAILED my son. I do what I do so that we can raise awareness, raise funds, and TRY to make a positive impact to get more resources, more training, more understanding, so that no one else has to tell a story like ours.
