TIMELAPSE TUESDAY! ⏱️🎥

Ever seen a mezzanine inside a cave? How about one with a built-in ramp? 👀

This isn't your typical warehouse project!

CWS recently designed and installed a one-of-a-kind mezzanine system for an underground gym. Rather than traditional industrial storage, this custom solution features an inclined ramp for weighted sled pushes and uphill sprints, along with an elevated second level that takes advantage of the high ceiling clearance to create additional space for cardio equipment.

The best part? This customer was previously told their vision couldn't be done.

Challenge accepted. 💪

At CWS, we don't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Whether you're maximizing warehouse storage or bringing an unconventional idea to life, our team has the creativity, experience, and expertise to make it happen.

Unique challenges call for custom solutions. Let's build something!

💡 DID YOU KNOW? | WAREHOUSE DESIGN

Your warehouse ceiling might be one of your most underutilized storage opportunities!

Many warehouses have valuable vertical space sitting unused while floor space becomes increasingly crowded.

By taking advantage of available clear height with a properly designed pallet racking system, you may be able to:

📦 Increase pallet storage capacity
📐 Make better use of your existing footprint
🚜 Improve product organization and accessibility
💰 Reduce the need for costly building expansion

But going higher isn't always as simple as adding more beams. Forklift lift height and capacity, rack engineering, sprinkler requirements, building clearances, and product weights must all be considered.

CWS provides FREE on-site consultations and CAD warehouse layout designs to help maximize your facility's storage potential.

Don't just think bigger. Think higher!

💡 DID YOU KNOW? | PALLET RACK 101

Drive-in and push-back racking can both increase storage density—but they accomplish it very differently.

With drive-in racking, the forklift enters the rack structure to place and retrieve pallets. This can create extremely dense storage with fewer aisles and is often considered when storing larger quantities of fewer SKUs.

With push-back racking, pallets are stored multiple positions deep while the forklift generally remains at the aisle face. Nested carts or other engineered components allow pallets to move within the storage lane.

So which one is better?

That depends on the operation.

Considerations can include:

🔹 Number of SKUs
🔹 Pallets per SKU
🔹 Inventory rotation requirements
🔹 Desired storage density
🔹 Required selectivity
🔹 Forklift traffic and workflow
🔹 Available building dimensions

Sometimes the best warehouse doesn't use just one type of racking. Different areas of the same facility can use different storage systems based on the products being stored.

📐 CWS can evaluate your inventory, operation, and available space to design a storage solution around the way your business actually works.

💡 DID YOU KNOW? | PALLET RACK 101

Need more pallet positions but don't have more building?

Push-back racking can increase storage density by allowing multiple pallets to be stored deep within the same rack lane.

Pallets typically sit on nested carts or another engineered system that allows each successive pallet to move deeper into the lane. As the front pallet is removed, the pallets behind it move toward the picking face.

The result?

📦 More pallets within the same footprint
↔️ Fewer aisles compared with conventional selective rack
⬆️ Better utilization of available warehouse cube
🚜 Loading and unloading from the aisle face

Push-back can be especially useful when a facility has multiple pallets of the same SKU but still needs more selectivity than some other high-density storage methods provide.

It's not the right solution for every operation, which is why inventory characteristics and product flow should drive the design.

CWS can help determine whether selective, push-back, drive-in, or another storage system provides the best fit for your facility.

💡 DID YOU KNOW? | PALLET RACK 101

There's a reason selective pallet racking is one of the most common warehouse storage systems.

Its biggest advantage is simple: ACCESS.

Unlike higher-density systems that store multiple pallets deep, selective racking generally allows operators to access individual pallet positions directly from the aisle.

That makes it a versatile option for facilities with:

🔹 A large number of SKUs
🔹 Frequent inventory movement
🔹 Products requiring individual pallet access
🔹 Changing storage requirements
🔹 A need for straightforward inventory management

Selective rack can also be configured in numerous heights, bay widths, depths, and capacities to accommodate different pallets and operations.

But the rack is only one part of the equation. Aisle width, forklift type, clear height, pallet dimensions, load weights, workflow, and future growth should all be considered when designing the system.

Stop Stacking. Start Maximizing.

Floor stacking can limit your storage capacity when valuable vertical space is sitting unused.

CWS recently helped this customer significantly increase their storage capacity by taking advantage of their high ceiling clearance with a very narrow aisle (VNA) selective pallet racking system. The new layout maximizes both vertical and floor space while creating a more organized and efficient warehouse operation.

Is your warehouse making the most of every square foot—and every vertical foot?

💡 DID YOU KNOW? | PALLET RACK 101

Not all pallet racking systems are the same—and choosing the right system can have a major impact on how efficiently your warehouse operates.

Selective rack provides direct access to individual pallets and maximum versatility.

Push-back rack increases storage density by storing multiple pallets deep within each lane.

Drive-in rack can provide very high-density storage when selectivity is less important.

Cantilever rack is designed for long, bulky, or irregular materials such as pipe, tubing, lumber, and steel.

The best solution depends on your inventory, pallet quantities, SKU count, product flow, lift equipment, available space, and operational requirements.

📐 CWS can evaluate your facility and help determine which storage system—or combination of systems—makes the most sense for your operation.

Better storage starts with the right system.

💡 DID YOU KNOW? | RACK SAFETY
Pallet rack inspections shouldn't only happen after someone notices a problem.

Forklift impacts, damaged components, missing hardware, anchoring issues, and other conditions can develop during normal warehouse operations.

A routine inspection program can help your facility:

🔎 Identify potential problems earlier
🔧 Address damaged components
📋 Document areas requiring attention
🛡️ Maintain a safer storage environment
💰 Reduce the likelihood of larger repair costs

Prevent today. Protect tomorrow.

CWS offers FREE pallet rack safety inspections along with professional repair, replacement, design, and installation services.

💡 DID YOU KNOW? | RACK SAFETY

Those small anchors at the bottom of your pallet rack uprights have an important job.

Rack anchorage is part of the overall installed system and helps secure the racking to the warehouse floor.

Missing, loose, damaged, or improperly installed anchors shouldn't simply be overlooked—especially if the rack has previously been impacted or modified.

During a rack inspection, CWS can evaluate anchoring along with uprights, bracing, beams, connections, accessories, and other visible conditions throughout the system.

🔎 When was the last time your pallet racking was inspected?
