Last Tuesday, we sent out our newest monthly blog - which was all about the building blocks of problem-solving. Below are three common workplace scenarios that can help you practice problem-solving skills.

1)Lack of proper communication:
Andy asks Nelly to send over a report with no other details. Nelly, assuming it is of no big deal at this exact moment, puts it to the side. Tomorrow, Andy asks where the report is. Nelly, now frustrated, has to figure out and send this report over today.
*Some problem-solving ideas:Follow up in a clear and concise way. Use straightforward language and check-ins if need be.

2)Differences in Personality:
Joe and Tom are paired together for a project. Joe is outspoken and outgoing whereas Tom is more reserved and doesn’t speak as much until spoken to. Joe is rambling off ideas and feels Tom isn’t saying enough. Tom feels Joe won’t let him get a word in and now both are frustrated.
*Some problem-solving ideas: Remember to be empathetic and understanding. Have someone to mediate if both members are clashing too hard.

3) Clashing Workstyles:
Randy and Sara are in the same team at work. Randy is more carefree when it comes to scheduling and other matters. Sara is very type-A; blocking off certain times for breaks, meetings, etc. Being on the same team, it can be frustrating for both Randy and Sara as their communication and wants seem to have no middle ground.
*Some problem-solving ideas: Focus on the outcomes. Communicate what really matters. Hold more team meetings if need be.

When many of us think of problem-solving, we think of literally just finding any answer to solve X problem. The fact is that problem-solving can be much more complex than that. In fact, the definition of problem-solving even changes based on what we’re applying it to. In this case, we are covering...

Lack of creativity is something many businesses may struggle with. One way to generate more creativity is by gathering a bunch of ideas - even all the ones that may seem bad in comparison to your good one. By having a plethora of ideas, you have numerous ideas, and even ones you would’ve never thought of, to help make the best decisions for your business. Furthermore, you may find it easier for yourself (and especially your team) by allowing them to come up with many ideas instead of the expected “right one.” Creativity is less likely to be stifled when everyone is able to let all your ideas flow out of your head. Next, block out time for yourself. A common complaint for lack of change/ideas is that there is no time. By freeing up space in your day, you are giving yourself the best opportunity to innovate for current (and future) problems as well as granting the space and time needed to be your best self. Finally, consider waiting to proceed with decisions made after sharing ideas of problem-solving. By waiting, everyone is likely to think about this task longer and thus, more likely to come up with further, or even better, solutions to said problem(s). Creativity always has a place in business and these are just a few ways to improve it!
