While he still sailed the ocean blue in 1492, it was Leif Eriksson who landed in North America first around 1000 AD. As Columbus Day became a national holiday in 1934, it became one of the most common misconceptions surrounding the holiday’s origin.

Polk County is known for its many organizations that empower the community.

We had the opportunity to visit the teams at Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine, Alliance for Independence, and Volunteers in Service to the Elderly this week, and we are encouraged by how each organization supports underserved individuals. Their impact goes beyond what they provide: it helps support our community for the better.

We enjoyed being able to learn more about what these organizations do every day as part of the United Way agency tours, and we can’t wait to see what they do next!
