The Brigid's Cross is a symbol of one of Ireland's patron saints, Brigid of Kildare, although it's very likely the symbol predates Chrisitanity, with roots in either the pagan Sun Wheel or as a representation of the constellation Ursa Major turning upon the North Star.
Brigid's Crosses are often placed under the eaves or on the door of a home to promote peace and fertility, and to prevent fires, famine and other bad things from happening. They've also been hung on barn walls to keep the animals safe and help the cows produce more milk.
This Brigid's cross hangs on a mix of greens, gold, and pale yellow Czech glass beads, reminiscent of th e colors of a fertile field in the rolling Irish countryside.
