→ Spiders and egg sacs tucked in the cobwebs (the fake ones and the real ones)
→ Roaches hiding in cardboard folds, and rodent droppings or chewed decorations
→ Open stored boxes outside, wear gloves, shake each piece out, and repack in sealed plastic bins instead of cardboard
→ Keep pumpkins off the porch rail and away from doors, set hay bales away from the house walls, and toss pumpkins before they rot

When SoCal nights cool down, roof rats go looking for a warm, quiet place to spend the season, and an attic is perfect.

→ Listen for scratching or scurrying overhead in the evening
→ Look for droppings in the attic or garage and dark rub marks along eaves and beams
→ Check fruit trees for half-eaten fruit, and notice if pet food disappears overnight
→ Trim branches 4–6 ft back from the roof, pick up fallen fruit, and bring pet food in at night

The first fall rain showed up, and so did the trail of tiny ants across your kitchen counter. 🐜

It isn't bad luck, and it isn't a dirty house. Here's what's actually going on in Southern California homes this week:

→ Argentine ants nest shallow, just under the soil along your foundation, under pavers, and beneath mulch
→ The first real rain floods those nests, so the whole colony relocates
→ Your home is the closest dry place with food and water
→ Spraying the trail kills the ants you see. The colony outside doesn't even notice.

AG Pest tip: before you wipe up the trail, follow it. Where the ants come into the room is the most useful thing you can tell a technician, and sealing that one gap often stops the whole parade.

See a cloud of winged insects recently? Before you panic — or ignore it — here's the 3-second test.

Check three things to tell if you're seeing ants or termites:

→ Wings — Termite: four wings, all the same length, extending well past the body. Ant: front wings noticeably longer than the back pair.

→ Waist — Termite: straight and thick, no pinch. Ant: sharply pinched.

→ Antennae — Termite: straight and beaded. Ant: clearly elbowed.

In Southern California, our main structural termite swarms in the FALL, not the spring. Western drywood termites fly by day from September through November, usually on hot Santa Ana afternoons.

A swarm in the air nearby doesn't prove your house is infested — they could be from a neighbor's, a fence, or a tree. What matters more is finding discarded wings on an interior windowsill or in a bathtub.

One more thing: don't vacuum the evidence! Take a photo first.

Feels like spiders appeared out of nowhere this week? You're not imagining it — September is their peak.

Two things line up at the same time:

→ It's mating season, so males that normally stay hidden are out and moving
→ Populations are at their yearly high after a whole summer of eating other insects

Where they set up in SoCal homes: garage corners, meter boxes, under patio furniture, in stacked pots, woodpiles, and along the low outside walls. Black widows in particular like undisturbed, dark, ground-level spaces — which is exactly what a forgotten stack of planters is.

Here's what actually reduces them: cutting down the insects they eat, clearing ground-level clutter, and sealing gaps. Knocking down webs just relocates the spider.

→ Ant colonies at peak size, pushing indoors for water
→ Rodents starting to scout for a warm place to spend the winter

What you do in August and September decides whether you have a rodent problem in December. The move indoors is easier to prevent than to evict.
