Marino Marini’s 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦 reduces the horse and rider to a few simple, angular forms. Even in this pared-down composition, one of the artist’s most familiar subjects remains clearly present.

Conceived in 1956 and cast in bronze by 1958, 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦 belongs to the period in which Marini increasingly transformed his traditional equestrian imagery. Rather than presenting the rider as a triumphant or heroic figure, Marini explored a relationship marked by instability, tension, and loss of control.

This transformation was particularly significant in Marini’s postwar work. The familiar mounted hero gradually became something more vulnerable. The horse and rider seem to break apart into simplified masses, bringing the work close to abstraction while retaining traces of their human and animal origins.

The rough, hand-worked bronze surface further intensifies the sense of movement and physical tension. Marini was using distortion and fragmentation to express a deeper psychological condition.

Seen in this context, 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦 is more than a study in modernist form. It is part of Marini’s larger meditation on human vulnerability, power, conflict, and the uncertain relationship between human beings and the forces they try to control.

𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦 headlines 𝘗𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘦 𝘍𝘪𝘹𝘭𝘦𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 presented by Rago/Wright on September 15th. The work carries a $400,000 - 600,000 estimate.

What does wind look like when it’s captured in bronze?

In Richard Hunt’s 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗽𝘁, solid metal seems to defy its own weight. Throughout his career, Hunt transformed industrial materials into forms that suggest growth, movement, and transformation. He described his approach as a reconciliation of “the organic and the industrial.” Made in 1986, during a particularly active period of experimentation with bronze and steel, 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗽𝘁 embodies Hunt’s remarkable ability to make metal feel alive.
