Our second presentation on June 11th brings together more than 40 ceramic works chosen by the Natzlers as especially significant examples of their practice and drawn from the collection they assembled for themselves.

United in a marriage of artistry, the Natzlers left an indelible mark on the discipline of ceramics: Gertrud as a master of form, creating distinctly modernist sculptural vessels at the wheel, and Otto as an alchemist of glaze, whose tireless experimentation yielded results of extraordinary depth and influence. Together, these works—most of which have not previously been available on the open market—offer an intimate window into the shared vision and enduring legacy of two of the 20th century’s most visionary ceramic artists.

A forgotten masterpiece returns to the spotlight at Rago.

Anna Marie Valentien’s exceptional and large vase with n**e female figure—discovered in a New Mexico thrift shop after being lost to time for over a century—set a new world auction record at $153,600 in Rago’s 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 & 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 sale. Produced between 1911 and 1914, the work reflects Valentien’s distinctive sculptural approach to ceramics, integrating the human form directly into the vessel itself.

Maynard Dixon’s 1904 painting 𝘕𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘫𝘰 𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘭 reflects the artist’s early engagement with the landscapes and Indigenous communities of the American Southwest, a subject that would come to define much of his career. Created during a period of extensive travel throughout Arizona and the Southwest, the work captures Dixon’s ongoing interest in portraying Native subjects with dignity and directness, moving away from the romanticized imagery common in earlier Western art.

𝗔𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗥𝗢𝗪 • Leading tomorrow’s 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 & 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 auction is Anna Marie Valentien’s exceptional and large vase with n**e female figure.

This work was produced for Valentien Pottery between 1911 and 1914, and stands as a compelling synthesis of sculpture and vessel, embodying the artist’s distinctive approach to surface form. “Recently discovered in a New Mexico thrift shop,” notes David Rago, “this one-of-a-kind work represents a forgotten treasure thought to be lost to time. For a masterpiece like this to sit unidentified for over a century is pretty rare.”

The reclining figure on this Valentien vase echoes the Symbolist fascination with the female form as both decorative and allegorical, while also recalling earlier Rookwood experiments with siren-like figures that appear to float upon or sink into their surroundings. This vase not only highlights Valentien’s technical and artistic achievements, but it similarly underscores her role in advancing a more expressive, sculptural vision of ceramics in the early 20th century.
