A landmark in EC Comics history hits the auction block tomorrow night.

𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 # 𝟭𝟱 features 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 and the debut of The Crypt of Terror, planting the seed for what would become EC’s legendary horror line.

Published in 1949, the issue features work by Johnny Craig, Al Feldstein, Fred Peters, and John Alton, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of pre Code horror. Exceptionally scarce in high grade, this CGC 8.5 is the only example at the grade, with just 13 copies higher, ranking among the top 14 Universal Grade examples of only 93 recorded on the CGC Census. According to GPAnalysis, no CGC 8.5 has previously sold publicly, making this the first example in the grade to appear on the public market.

One of the great science fiction covers of the Golden Age, 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 # 𝟭𝟭 showcases L.B. Cole at his absolute best.

Against a deep black background, Cole’s electric colors, otherworldly landscape, and wonderfully bizarre spacecraft create the kind of composition that has made his work so coveted by Golden Age collectors.

Published in 1947, this final issue of the series also features interior artwork by Rudy Palais and George Appel. Graded 𝗖𝗚𝗖 𝟲.𝟬 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹, the rich colors and strong overall presentation give this copy eye appeal that punches above its numerical grade.

Classic L.B. Cole in every sense, and a spectacular example of why his sci-fi covers remain among the most celebrated images of the Golden Age.

of the true grails of independent comics, Albedo # 2 features the historic first appearance of Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo, launching a character and universe that has endured for more than four decades. Published independently in 1984, the issue features a story and artwork by Steven Gallacci, with cover and interior artwork by Sakai, along with letters from Peter Laird and Don Thompson.

Condition takes this copy into another league. Independently produced comics of the era were never created with future 9.8 preservation in mind, and the unforgiving predominantly black cover makes even the slightest handling defect immediately apparent. Graded CGC 9.8, this exceptional copy is one of just 21 at the highest Universal Grade among 306 examples recorded on the CGC Census.

A top population example of an independent comics masterpiece and the first appearance of one of the medium’s most beloved creator owned characters.
