From these pictures, you can see the location latrine, NE of the house. The two doors suggest a probable four-hole system, yet to be identified through archaeological investigation. Volunteers are welcome to participate in the excavation, screening, artifact analysis and preparation.

Please contact me if you would like to volunteer. My email is: [email protected]. The Iowa State Archaeologist has approved the project, and it will maintain professional standards.

While digging to plant an apricot tree, Richard Oliver Smith and I discovered both gray and yellow limestone 10-cm below the surface. We found dark soil underneath, which indicated a cultural intrusion and not a natural formation. Further probing demonstrated a pathway 10-ft wide of the limestone, crossing full-width of the Joseph Smith III house. This appears to have been a carriage road.
