This is what happens when you throw batteries away in your trash can.

Earlier this week we had a close call at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). One of our community's residential collection garbage trucks arrived with a fire, caused by this lithium ion battery. Luckily our team acted quickly and we were able to extinguish the fire, but things very quickly could have escalated.

While they may appear harmless, when you throw batteries away in your trash can at home, they can become extremely dangerous, causing serious fires and endangering garbage trucks, our recycling equipment, and our staff.

Instead, batteries can be dropped off every day for FREE at the WPWMA's facility (3195 Athens Ave., Lincoln) OR you can schedule a free pick-up from your garbage hauler. Learn more - https://wpwma.ca.gov/placer-recycles/batteries-keep-them-out/

Now that the holidays are winding down, there are four easy ways to recycle your Christmas tree:

1️⃣ Place unflocked trees in your green waste bin – Remove all branches and cut the trunk into sizes small enough to fit within the bin. Make sure the tree fits completely within the bin with the lid closed.
2️⃣ Take your tree to a FREE tree drop-off site – Check out the list of drop-off sites on our website to learn where (& when) you can drop off your tree for FREE in western Placer County.
3️⃣ Youth Collection – Some Scouts of America Troops and local youth sports teams across Placer County offer Christmas Tree collection.
4️⃣ Drop it off at the Western Placer Waste Management Authority – Trees can be dropped off every day of the year at our facility. Disposal fees will apply.

These trees will make their way to the WPWMA where they will be recycled into compost or wood chips! ♻ Learn more by visiting -
