Joseph Horst established this reputation in the late 1800s when he took on his first construction project for Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church in Lancaster County, PA. In 1961, Abram Horst Jr. and Clyde Horst, great-grandsons to Joseph, founded Horst Excavating. What started as an economical way to provide equipment and services for construction projects quickly became a solid business venture. Today, Horst Excavating is a business unit of the Horst Group. The equipment may be what catches your eye first, but it’s the people in the field who keep every project moving.

Every day, our crews are operating equipment, checking grades, setting elevations, working through site conditions, coordinating with one another, and making sure each step is completed the right way. A lot of the work that keeps a project on track happens in the details, and that takes experience, communication, and a team that knows how to work together.

These photos are a small look at the people behind the progress. The operators, laborers, foremen, and field leaders who show up every day ready to solve problems, keep work moving, and support the team around them.

We’re proud of the work being done across our jobsites, but even more proud of the people doing it.

A lot can change in a year and a half!
What started as open ground and the early stages of earthwork has transformed into a growing neighborhood at Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook, PA.

It’s easy to see the difference between the before and after, but what’s not always visible is everything that happened in between.
From grading and underground utilities to stormwater infrastructure and site preparation, countless hours of hard work went into creating the foundation for what you see today. Every stage of the process plays a part in bringing a project like this to life.
That’s one of the things we love about what we do. We get to help turn plans on paper into places where people will live, connect, and build memories for years to come.

A beautiful day for a great cause!

Teams from Horst Excavating and Horst Construction had a great time hitting the course for the 36th Annual Putt for Education Mini Golf Event! It was a fun opportunity to step away from the jobsite and office, enjoy some friendly competition, and spend the day supporting our local community.

A big thank you to Junior Achievement of South Central PA for hosting another great event and for everything you do to support and prepare young people in our community for their futures.

A successful project starts long before the first piece of equipment reaches the jobsite.

For the past year and a half, Ivan has been helping Horst Excavating turn ideas, plans, and opportunities into something real.

What he enjoys most about estimating is the creativity behind it. Every project is different and comes with its challenges. Sometimes the best solution comes from looking at a job from a new angle, whether that means finding value-engineering options, or finding a less traditional way to bring a concept to life.

But for Ivan, estimating has never been just about the numbers.
“Win or lose, it’s more than the number.”

It’s about trust and communication. It’s about the relationships built with suppliers, subcontractors, and the people you work alongside every day. It’s about having a strong team beside you, treating people fairly, and putting integrity into every bid that goes out the door.

Lately, that approach has helped Ivan secure several projects for HE, including the sitework for the redevelopment of a former shopping center. Wins like these are exciting, not only because of the work itself, but because they create opportunities to build new relationships, show what our team is capable of, and potentially open new doors down the road.

Behind every awarded project are long hours of thought, collaboration, problem-solving, and everyone working together toward the same goal. Ivan’s recent success is a great reminder that the work happening behind the scenes matters just as much as the work happening in the field.

We’re lucky to have Ivan helping turn opportunities into projects and helping keep HE moving forward.

We’re excited to welcome two new faces to the Horst team!

Aaron Paul joins us as a Project Coordinator, helping keep projects organized, connected, and moving forward.

Nicholas Paumier joins the field team as an Equipment Operator, bringing his skills to the work happening every day on our job sites.

We’re glad to have both Aaron and Nicholas on board and look forward to seeing all they bring to the team. Welcome to Horst!
