Horst Excavating

Horst Excavating For 60+ years, Horst Excavating has exceeded the needs of general contractors, developers, government services, and private organizations.

No matter the size or scope of your project, we are the excavating company that does sitework right. For over 120 years, the Horst name has been synonymous with high standards. Joseph Horst established this reputation in the late 1800s when he took on his first construction project for Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church in Lancaster County, PA. In 1961, Abram Horst Jr. and Clyde Horst, grea

t-grandsons to Joseph, founded Horst Excavating. What started as an economical way to provide equipment and services for construction projects quickly became a solid business venture. Today, Horst Excavating is a business unit of the Horst Group. Our years of experience, combined with a top-notch safety record and the latest technologies and field equipment, have built strong foundations for municipal infrastructure, commercial buildings, educational facilities and wind farms throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania and beyond. No matter the project size, you can always count on Horst Excavating to deliver experience, innovation and value. http://www.horstexcavating.com/

Did you know?
Before a new school, hospital, or commercial building can be constructed, the site may require undercutting, a process where unsuitable soil is excavated and replaced.

For example, if excavation reveals soft, saturated clay instead of stable material, crews remove that soil and install engineered fill in compacted layers. This creates the strength needed to safely support the building's foundation and reduce future settlement.

It's one of those critical steps that most people never see, but every successful project depends on it.

Working through the summer heat is part of the job, but staying safe starts with making smart decisions before the temperature takes its toll.

Read more on our newest blog at: https://www.horstexcavating.com/job-safety-tips-staying-safe-when-the-heat-rises/

High temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, fatigue, reduced focus, and even equipment failures if proper precautions aren't taken. That's why a few simple habits can make a big difference throughout the workday.

- Hydrate before you're thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already becoming dehydrated. Drinking water consistently throughout the day helps regulate your body temperature, reduces strain on your heart, and lowers the risk of heat-related illnesses.

- Protect yourself from the sun. Wear the appropriate PPE, apply sunscreen, stay hydrated, and take breaks in the shade whenever possible. Limiting prolonged sun exposure helps reduce the risk of heat illness while protecting your skin and keeping you comfortable on the job.

- Take advantage of your breaks. Use break time to move into the shade, cool down, and rehydrate. Giving your body a chance to recover helps you stay alert, maintain productivity, and safely tackle the rest of the day.

- Inspect your equipment. Summer temperatures place added stress on heavy equipment. Daily inspections can help identify worn or damaged components before they become costly breakdowns, keeping machines operating safely and projects moving forward.

- Watch for signs of heat stress. Look out for yourself and those around you. Symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, excessive sweating, confusion, or unusual fatigue should never be ignored. Speaking up and taking action early can prevent a minor issue from becoming a medical emergency.

At Horst Excavating, safety isn't seasonal. It's part of everything we do. Looking out for one another, following safe work practices, and taking the extra time to prepare for the heat helps ensure every member of our team goes home safely at the end of the day.

Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Stay safe.

A new chapter begins at Horst Excavating.
Please join us in congratulating Jason Hess on his appointment as President of Horst Excavating.

With more than 30 years of experience in the sitework industry and over 13 years with Horst Excavating, Jason has helped shape the company through his leadership, dedication, and commitment to excellence. His appointment reflects not only his experience, but Horst Excavating's commitment to developing leaders from within.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to Harry F. Scheid II for nearly 40 years of leadership and service. Harry's vision helped build the strong foundation our company stands on today, and we're grateful he will continue supporting both organizations in an advisory role as CEO of Horst Excavating/Construction Group.

While leadership is evolving, our commitment to our clients, employees, and partners remains the same. We look forward to continuing to build strong relationships and deliver exceptional sitework solutions for years to come.
