Waste-to-energy (WTE) turns non-hazardous waste that cannot be recycled into electricity. It’s a safe and efficient process that helps to power local homes and businesses using the waste that might otherwise go straight to a landfill.

LCSWMA operates two WTE facilities, one in Lancaster County and one in Dauphin County, transforming waste into a valuable resource for our communities.

We are open for business today on Columbus Day/ Indigenous People’s Day!

Whether you have trash, recyclables, or household hazardous waste (HHW), you can plan a trip to one of our facilities. Lancaster County residents can drop off batteries and other HHW for FREE at our HHW Facility!

Did you know landfill gas can be turned into a reliable fuel source?

At LCSWMA's Frey Farm Landfill, methane is collected through a network of pipes and converted into a reliable source of fuel instead of being released directly into the atmosphere.

Since 2005, our landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) plant has been putting this resource to work. The 3.2-megawatt project exports energy to the PJM power grid and is operated by NextEra Renewable Fuels." with "The 3.2-megawatt project is operated by a national renewable energy company and exports energy to the local grid. This is one more way we turn everyday waste into a resource!

The Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) is greatly saddened to announce the passing of former Chief Executive Officer James (Jim) D. Warner, who led the authority from 1996 to 2018, and whose leadership, vision, and dedication helped shape our organization and the communities we serve.

Jim's legacy lives on through the people, programs, and environmental initiatives he championed throughout his remarkable career. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
