📰 The Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced plans to develop a second transfer station in northeast Lancaster County. On August 27, 2026, the Authority purchased a 37-acre property in East Cocalico Township for the future facility.

As Lancaster County continues to grow, LCSWMA must expand its capacity to serve residents, businesses, and waste haulers by providing an additional location to receive and consolidate waste before it is transported for processing and disposal.

“This future facility will help LCSWMA better manage waste consolidation in a growing community while enhancing service for our customers,” said Daniel G. Youngs, LCSWMA Executive Director. “As we continue to experience increasing waste tonnage in Lancaster County, it is important that we are positioned to handle this material safely, efficiently, and responsibly.”

LCSWMA is currently in the initial planning phase for the project. Updates will be shared through the Authority’s website and social media channels as planning and development move forward.

By tarping or securing your load before visiting our facilities, you're protecting the health and safety of our community, protecting the environment, and abiding by the law.

Pennsylvania’s state and federal requirements are as follows:
Loads must be covered with a securely fastened water-resistant cover that eliminates potential for littering and other nuisances. 25 Pa. Code §§ 285.211(a) and 299.211(a)

FRIENDLY REMINDER: Any open load that is not tarped will be charged a $20 penalty.

✅Check Your Bins!

Plastic bags do NOT belong in your curbside recycling bin. Instead, take them to a designated drop-off location or find ways to reuse them.

When it comes to curbside recycling, stick to the BIG 4:

1️⃣ Corrugated cardboard

2️⃣ Plastic bottles and jugs with necks

3️⃣ Metal food and beverage cans

4️⃣ Glass jars and bottles

♻️ Remember to flatten cardboard and empty, rinse, and dry food and beverage containers before recycling.

Rechargeable electronic bikes can pose hidden risks. 🔥

Many are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat, spark, or even catch fire if damaged or improperly charged. Always follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions and handle batteries carefully. When they reach end of life, remove the lithium-ion battery before disposing of the remaining bike parts.

Lancaster County residents can recycle electronic bike batteries and other select items containing lithium-ion batteries for FREE at the LCSWMA Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHW).

National Thrift Shop Day is a reminder that waste prevention begins with all of us ♻️

As waste generators, we all play a key role in the waste ecosystem through the choices we make every day, and a few small changes can make a large impact in waste reduction.

Before tossing your item in the trash, consider donating it to your local thrift shop. Before purchasing something new, check out used options. Lancaster has several antique and thrift shops with timeless pieces. Supporting secondhand businesses keeps valuable items in use longer, reduces unnecessary waste, and supports a more sustainable future.

This week, we teamed up with Lancaster County STEM Alliance to welcome educators from across Lancaster County for an up-close look at LCSWMA’s Integrated System.

Through tours of our Transfer Station Complex, Lancaster Waste-to-Energy Facility, and Frey Farm Landfill, LCSWMA staff guided participants through the journey of waste. They also facilitated hands-on activities that demonstrated the various roles in the waste ecosystem, highlighting how everyday choices made by generators shape the waste stream LCSWMA manages. This immersive experience empowered educators to turn complex waste and sustainability concepts into engaging lessons for their students, including our own PA-STEELS-aligned lesson plan for grades 3-12 (coming soon!).

Thank you to Dr. Lauren Miller and the Lancaster STEM Alliance Staff for partnering with us, and to all the educators who participated in the Externship!
