Tax extensions may have given some taxpayers a little extra time, but eventually that deadline catches up with you!

I'm currently working on finalizing a tax return for a client who filed an extension earlier this year. While tax season may feel like it's long behind us, there are still plenty of returns being completed, along with bookkeeping cleanups and regular monthly work.

And that's one reason accurate, up-to-date bookkeeping matters so much. When tax time comes around, having your financial records organized makes the process much smoother—and gives your tax preparer better information to work with.

At Oak Hill Solutions, I help small businesses keep their books organized throughout the year so tax preparation doesn't have to feel like starting from scratch.

The garden is officially in full swing around here!

We're bringing in plenty of squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers—and apparently the jalapeños decided to take their job very seriously this year. 🌶️🔥

There's something satisfying about a garden producing enough that you have to figure out what to do with it all. It also reminds me a little of bookkeeping: the small, consistent work adds up.

A few transactions here, a few reconciliations there, a little cleanup along the way—and eventually you have a much clearer picture of what's really going on.

Speaking of bookkeeping, I've been busy this week with both cleanup projects and regular monthly bookkeeping for clients.

Whether your books need a little maintenance or a major cleanup, getting them organized gives you much better information to make decisions for your business.

Now...anyone have a favorite way to use an excessive amount of summer squash? 😂

This week marks the beginning of another homeschool co-op year for our family, and this year I'm stepping into a new role: teaching middle-schoolers one day a week.

As a homeschool mom and a small-business owner, my weeks don't always fit neatly into one category. There are days spent working on bookkeeping cleanups and monthly financials, days spent teaching, and plenty of days where both worlds overlap!

One thing I appreciate about running my own bookkeeping business is the flexibility it gives me to build my work around the things that matter most to our family.

And yes, I'll still be making sure the books get done. 😉

Here's to a new school year, new clients, new projects, and hopefully a little margin in between!

One of the things I enjoy about working with small businesses is helping take care of the details that happen behind the scenes so the business owner can focus on running the business.

This week, I wrapped up the setup of a new business, making sure everything was in place at the federal, state, and local levels. From registrations and licenses to making sure the business is ready to operate properly, there are a lot of details to coordinate when you're getting started.

Getting those details right from the beginning can save a lot of headaches later.

If you're starting a new business and aren't sure what needs to be done—or you're wondering whether you've taken care of everything you need to—I'd be happy to help you work through the process.

Starting a business involves more than just getting your first customer. Depending on your business and location, you may need to:

• Form your business entity
• Obtain an EIN from the IRS
• Register with your state
• Complete any required local registrations or licenses
• Set up a bookkeeping system from the beginning

Getting these pieces in place early can save a lot of headaches later.

If you're starting a business and aren't sure what applies to you, I'm happy to help you navigate the process.

It's a quieter week around our house with the kids away at camp.

That has meant a little extra focus at work—and a little extra time in the garden. After weeks of waiting, we're finally picking fresh vegetables!

One of the things I enjoy most about owning a small business is that it allows me to build a schedule around what matters most: serving my clients well while still making time for family and life at home.

I hope you're finding a little time this week to enjoy the slower moments, too.

When is it time to move beyond spreadsheets?

Spreadsheets are a great way to start tracking income and expenses. They're inexpensive and simple.

But as your business grows, you may notice:
• Transactions are taking longer to enter.
• You have multiple bank or credit card accounts.
• You need better reports for taxes or decision-making.
• You're spending more time fixing formulas than running your business.

That's usually a sign it's time to consider bookkeeping software.

The good news? You don't need the most expensive system. There are affordable options that can save hours of work and provide much clearer financial information.

If you're wondering whether it's time to make the switch, I'd be happy to help you evaluate your options.

This week's office view...

✔️ Cleaning up bookkeeping records for a client so they can finally see accurate financial reports.
✔️ Helping a brand-new business get everything set up at the federal, state, and local levels.
✔️ Working with one of my quarterly bookkeeping clients to keep her books organized as her business continues to grow.

No two weeks look exactly alike, but they all have one thing in common: helping business owners spend less time worrying about paperwork and more time running their business.

What are you working on this week?

Happy Independence Day!

This year marks 250 years since our nation's founding—a milestone worth pausing to reflect on.

As a small business owner, I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve other small businesses, nonprofits, churches, and families in our community. The freedom to build something meaningful, serve others with our gifts, and invest in our local communities is a blessing I don't take for granted.

Whether you're spending today with family, watching fireworks, grilling out, or simply enjoying a slower pace, I hope it's filled with gratitude for the many blessings we enjoy.

From my family to yours, Happy Fourth of July!

As many of us head into a holiday weekend with family cookouts, fireworks, and time together, here's one reminder for fellow business owners:

Don't forget to step away from work.

There will always be another email to answer, another project to finish, or another item on the to-do list.

Time with family, friends, and the people who matter most is an investment that pays dividends you can't measure on a balance sheet.

Wishing everyone a safe, joyful, and restful Independence Day weekend!
