At 0856 hrs., box 55-05 was dispatched for the report of a house fire on Shutlz Road, just east of New Danville. Volunteers from 55 and surrounding mutual aid companies were on the box. Chief 55 arrived to find considerable smoke showing from the chimney, eaves, and vents on a 1.5 story SFD. Residents were located outside, homeowners advised they believed the fire was in a basement laundry room in the B/C corner. Residents stated that three cats were inside the home. Basement access was located on the C side, close to the C/D corner, but was determined to be secure. E55 arrived and stretched a 200' 1.75" attack line through the side B entry door and made entry into the basement, where the crew encountered zero visibility conditions with moderate heat. PT60 pulled a second 200' 1.75" line from E55 and were directed to the basement walkout door, to force entry and make access. E55 and PT60 crews encountered fire in the basement and extinguished, while Tower 50 handled ventilation, E53 searched the main level, and R66 had RIT. Three cats were removed from the residence by crews and rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic by members of 66. Unfortunately, one of the three cats suffered extensive smoke inhalation and did not make it. The other two cats are expected to recover quickly.

Upon discovery of the fire, the resident did close the door at the top of the basement stairs, likely helping to keep the fire in check until units arrived. Fire was contained to a utility / laundry room area, and a melted water pipe appears to have acted as a sprinkler, extinguishing the majority of the fire right around the time units arrived. As crews had just made entry into the basement, a sofa ignited from radiant heat, and was quickly extinguished.

Fire Police closed Shultz Road while units were working.

Significant smoke damage is present throughout the residence, and a restoration company was called in to handle that issue.

A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal responded and determined that the cause of the fire was unintentional, with two possible causes of ignition noted.

Our Monday night drill involved a mock crash involving a mini bus. Some of our members kids agreed to be “victims” that required removal from the vehicle. Thanks to West Willow Fire Company for joining us, and huge thanks to the guys from A&J Towing for everything they did to make this happen. Additional images will likely be posted at a later time.

As storm activity increases, the Department of Public Safety reminds residents to use 9‑1‑1 only for life‑threatening emergencies so call‑takers remain available for critical situations.

Around 12:30 this afternoon, The Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company requested engine and tanker for a large field fire. Tanker 55 arrived and supplied brush units and assisted with fire suppression while Engine 55 laid 900’ of 5” supply line down to a pond on the property and supplied approximately 4,000 gallons. We appreciate Iron Ridge Fire Rescue for standing by in our station while we assisted station 53 and helping to load the 900’ of supply line back on our engine. Special thanks also to whomever dropped a case of Gatorade off while we were at the fire. On a day like this we are grateful for these kind acts and are always in need of hydration drinks.

Photo swiped from Frogtown Cafe page - hope they don’t mind.

Old school shot of Pequea Township Police Department Sgt Barton with A/C Shenk, FF Hess (who later served as an assistant chief), and we believe A/C Steele. Shenk and Steele both served several years as fire chief, several years after this photo was taken.
