ADNET has proudly supported the NASA IV&V Program for many years. So glad to see the recognition for Ms. Johnson!

NASA Renames Facility in Honor of 'Hidden Figure' Katherine Johnson

NASA's IV&V Program facility in Fairmont, West Virginia, has been redesignated as the Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation Facility, in honor of the West Virginia native.

Story here: https://go.nasa.gov/2Tm0rsp

Johnson is a retired mathematician from NASA Langley Research Center. Her calculations were critical to NASA's first crewed spaceflights.

"Naming a facility like IV&V after Katherine Johnson is a great tribute to the contributions she and the other women 'computers' at Langley made to the space community, and will be an inspiration for the next generation of girls that will have an opportunity to make even greater contributions." —Christyl Johnson, Goddard Deputy Director for Technology and Research Investments

Give it up for our frequent flier Terra, a flagship Earth observing satellite, which just celebrated 100,000 orbits around Earth! Traveling 2.5 billion miles in almost 19 years, Terra is a testament to its remarkable team of scientists and engineers.

Terra is only one of a few satellites to reach this milestone, joining the ranks of the International Space Station, Landsat 5 and Landsat 7, among others. Its five onboard instruments continuously provide both long-term and immediate data about the health of our planet and its people.

Has the Moon ever seemed to follow you as you move? Well, on Twitter, you can follow the Moon! 🌑 We’re over the Moon to present you with the voice of the Moon for NASA, Molly Wasser, who manages both the and Twitter accounts.

Before she took an astronomy class as a lab requirement at Wellesley College, Wasser was not interested in studying science. But under the mentorship of her astronomy professor, she gained confidence and fell in love with space science. After college, she combined her film major and astronomy minor to make science education videos. Shortly after graduating with a master’s in educational technology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Wasser’s unique interests led her to work at Goddard Space Flight Center, where she helps keep the Moon account “a little bit sassy because I’m a little bit sassy.”

It might be a little hard to see the seeds of the planets, stars and galaxies around us today in this baby picture of the universe, but they’re in there! This light was emitted just a few hundred thousand years after the big bang and has already helped astronomers learn about the structure and composition of our universe.

Our PIPER balloon payload will fly at the edge of Earth’s atmosphere to look for patterns in this early light. Its launch window opens later this month. In the meantime, check out this Tumblr for more on this cosmic baby picture and what PIPER will help us learn: https://bit.ly/2x57s3n
