A useful resume check: could a stranger tell what you actually did at your last job?

Instead of stopping at “customer service,” name the work you handled. Answering calls? Resolving billing questions? Helping people at a busy front desk? Use the details that are true for you.

Before you publish that job ad, hand it to someone who doesn't already do the job. Can they tell you:

• Where they'll work?
• What the pay and schedule look like?
• Which qualifications they actually need?

If they have to guess, fill in the gaps. Give people enough information to decide whether the job works for them.

Pick one task you know well. Write down what a student must do, what conditions they'll work under, and what successful performance looks like. Could another instructor use your description to evaluate the same student fairly?

Try this the next time you walk into a place you know well: describe what a normal day there looks like. Where do people usually move? What sounds do you expect? What has changed?

Describe what you notice before deciding what it means. That's a useful habit to practice.
