BACK THEN by DICK SHEARER

Earlier this week, President Biden followed tradition and spared the lives of three turkeys as Thanksgiving Day rapidly approached.
We assume the birds seen here didn’t fare as well. They were herded into a field near Salfordville where they were fattened up for a few weeks before they were sold at public sales back in the early 1920s when this photograph was taken. Auctions and public sales of turkeys were common in the region a century ago, most notably in Hatfield.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
