Continuing our series of legislative meetings/tours at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) with Representative Pat Outman. Special thanks to Rep. Outman for taking the time to visit the Leslie E. Tassell Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC) on GRCC’s satellite location. It is the home base for the School of Workforce Training on campus and offers hands-on tech training in high-demand trades, including: automotive technology, construction and residential trades, welding and fabrication, computer support, machinist technician training, and a specialized pilot program.

The opening of the Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University was so impactful, our team was there for TWO full days of events. This week, our client 𝐒𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 joined Representative Joe Aragona and housing leaders for a bill signing with Governor Whitmer. House Bills 5806 - 5807 and Senate Bill 966 were signed into law and will bring more workforce housing units to Michigan…and help us fight the housing crisis. This is a 𝐁𝐈𝐆 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 and Sugar Creek was a key member of the Workforce Housing Coalition that helped make this happen! Sugar Creek CEO Chris Hite took part in the events and toured our beautiful Capitol.

Our team was honored to attend the Grand Opening of the Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University.

The Museum is the nation’s largest publicly accessible collection of artifacts of intolerance at 26,000-square-feet and houses more than 30,000 artifacts. It is a powerful display and serves to educate visitors about race relations in the United States. The Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University is envisioned as an international leader in the anti-racism movement.

Our team was not only at the public facing events, but also helped support the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus plan and execute a set of events to celebrate the opening. We feel fortunate to have been there for this meaningful couple of days.

Special thanks to Representative John Fitzgerald for taking the time to visit Grand Rapids Community College’s (GRCC) Applied Technology Center. GRCC provides a wonderful School of Workforce Training to develop the skills and knowledge to succeed in today’s evolving economy. The health care industry is one of the largest industries in the country, and we are fortunate Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) offers rigorous programming to prepare students to enter the workplace in West Michigan and beyond. Representative Carol Glanville spent some time earlier this week at Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall to learn more about the health care programs provided at GRCC. We were grateful she took the time to learn more about the health programming and how GRCC prepares our students to care for tomorrow’s patients.

Earlier this week, our firm supported the Salvation Army in the ex*****on of their 2026 Advocacy Day at Heritage Hall. The Salvation Army had almost 70 members from across the state, representing 40 total centers and 60 units, including: Board Members, staff and officers and were led by their Divisional Leadership -- Lieutenant Colonel Steven and Lieutenant Colonel Christine Merritt.

They were honored to have Representative Stephanie Young speak to them, host a slew of legislators and legislative staff for lunch, participate in meetings with legislative leaders, recognize the 2025 Kettle Bell Award Winners, and observe and be introduced on the Michigan House of Representatives’ Floor. It was a fun, jampacked day! We had a fantastic time talking about the important work they do to provide support services for Michiganders from meals to youth programs and older adult programs and beyond. We are looking forward to having them back in town in February 2027!

The Salvation Army is hosting a free winter clothing giveaway this Friday and Saturday at the Salvation Army Distribution Center, 3305 S. Pennsylvania Ave., in Lansing. Friday’s distribution is taking place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is only open to Salvation Army voucher holders. Families with students in the Lansing School District can contact their child’s school for more information on how to obtain a voucher. The distribution on Saturday is taking place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is open to the public.
