I got my bear… now what?

Prepping your hide BEFORE you get it to the taxidermist is vital if you aren’t able to bring it immediately after field dressing. We’ve unfortunately already seen some come in with bacteria damage due to the hide being rolled up immediately and put in the freezer. And bacteria can lead to hair slippage.

You might be thinking, “But heat is the enemy, so shouldn’t I put in the freezer asap?” Unfortunately, once it is rolled up, it takes a long time for the center layers of the hide to cool and freeze completely. Heat gets trapped in the middle layers and that leads to bacteria.

So here’s what you can do:

1. Bring it to us ASAP! We can skin it for you, cut it properly according to the mount you want, and take the hide from there, ensuring proper cleaning and cooling. Easy Peasy!

2. If you can’t get it to us right away follow these steps:

•Be mindful of cuts – Avoid cutting too far up the chest or neck — especially if you want a rug. Mike can send you a video on how to skin for a rug, just ask!
•Get the meat and fat off the hide! This is what traps that heat and bacteria.
•Cool the hide quickly – Lay it flat, skin side up, in a cool, dry place.
•Once cooled, Freezing is best – If not immediately possible, store in a cool, dry place temporarily.
•Improper care = irreversible damage – Hair slippage can’t be fixed, and you may need a replacement hide.

We've had some great bears — and great stories! — come through our door already this bear season!

Quick reminder - Mike will do the skinning for you, free with your taxidermy mount! We have a great set up with a hoist you back right under and an electric winch to do the heavy lifting. Once it's skun, you can back up again and we'll place it right back in on your tarp.
