What does the bug and rodent forecast look like for Laporte County?

FIRST: heavy winds bring spiders, plus late-season spiders are still up in the trees, and the trees just fell. Now, due to the displacement from 100 mph winds, they will be around your home and decks.

Second: the spiders will have plenty to eat. Pavement Ants are beginning to swarm. Expect the annoyance in the backyard. But pavement ants tunneling will be smashed after so much rain, because the ground is saturated. Watch that they aren't under the garage concrete apron, eroding your sand base below the concrete, leading to cracks.

Third: 100-mile winds and buckets of water lead to water damage in a structure. Trees and limbs falling can displace carpenter ants, and so can ground over-saturation. So watch for them moving in!

Fourth: For those unfortunate enough to have a hole in the roof or structure, I am sorry, but I have to offer this word of advice: with contractors backed up, stink bugs will soon look for entry into attics and stud cavities. If you have a trap, it will not be enough to prevent their entry. I have seen nightmares when the repair seals them inside.

Fifth: When we start to dry out, and evaporation begins, we will see huge pressure from mosquitoes breeding. With West Nile in the area, take precautions and empty water catches now; use Mosquito Dunks, an all-natural larvicide for flies and mosquitoes in flooded areas.

LASTLY: Rodents like deer mice and voles may move to higher ground and into structures. Deer mice can move to trees and wood piles as well.

This week we add a third word to the collection. You already own the thing it names.

Gossamer. Before it meant sheer fabric or a way of describing wedding veils, it meant exactly one thing, the fine spider silk that drifts through the air and strings the fences in late summer and fall. The oldest explanation of the word is goose summer, the warm spell when geese went to market and the fields filled with floating silk.

The silk is a fleet of tiny aviators. Young spiders climb a fence post, raise a thread to the breeze, and let it carry them to new ground. Sailors have met them miles offshore. Yours will mostly cross the yard.

Walk the fence line in tomorrow's early light and count the threads. The goose summer is starting. 🕸️

West Nile Virus has been detected in a pool of mosquitoes in St. Joseph County. The county health department said Thursday that the mosquitoes with the virus were found in Portage Township.
