It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our President and CEO, Dr. William E. Swartz, passed away on July 17 after a long illness. Bill was the heart and soul of Constellation and will be terribly missed.
Bill had a long career in chemistry, with a Bachelor of Science from Juniata College and a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1971. Bill joined University of South Florida in 1972 as a chemistry professor where he directed a basic research group in surface chemistry and published over 50 research papers. He later served as the chairman of the Chemistry Department. After 14 years, he left academia to manage the material science laboratories for the DOE Pinellas Plant in Largo, FL. He later managed the Technology Transfer program for the DOE and became instrumental in the commercialization of the Pinellas Plant. He joined Constellation Technology in 1996 and, under his leadership, the laboratories became a full-service, commercial material testing laboratory. In 2003, he began his business career as President and CEO of Constellation.
Bill will be remembered as a scientist, businessman, and friend, but his proudest roles were as husband, father, and grandfather. He was an avid Tampa Bay Rays fan and enjoyed playing tennis, basketball, and, especially golf.
He will be honored at a Celebration of Life gathering.
