Water that comes into your house during a storm is not rainwater by the time it reaches your door.

It has already crossed the street, the yard, and the storm drain, picking up whatever was sitting on all three. That is Category 3 water. Black water. Contaminated by default, no matter how clear it looks in the living room.

Which changes the whole job. Carpet and pad go. Soaked drywall gets cut. Everything porous that sat in it is a loss, and the space gets disinfected before anyone dries anything.

If storm water got inside, do not start pulling it up yourself. Call us.

September is Mold Awareness Month, and September in Pinellas County is when mold does its best work.

If you can see it and smell it, you do not need a test to confirm it is mold. A lab result will not change what happens next. The wall still comes out.

Testing earns its keep in narrower cases. A tenant dispute. A real estate sale. A doctor asking what someone is reacting to.

Mold testing is not something we offer. Removal is, and we are licensed for it here in Florida.

That backup during the last big rain probably was not your plumbing.

When four inches falls in an hour, the municipal system takes on more than it was built to carry. Groundwater pushes into old joints, storm flow and sanitary flow meet where they should not, and the whole system looks for the lowest open drain. Sometimes that is a shower pan or a floor drain inside your house.

Your pipes did nothing wrong. They were simply the low point.

Which matters for two reasons: a plumber cannot fix it, and standing water that arrived that way is contaminated, not just wet.

Call us and stay out of it.

"The carpet made a sound when I stepped on it that I will never forget."

That is how this Clearwater Beach homeowner described walking back in after Hurricane Helene. Salt water and sand had gotten into every room, and the floors were a total loss before we ever set foot inside.

Hear the rest in their words. They talk about the waterline on the baseboards, the sand, and what it felt like to have somebody show up and handle it. Storm season is hard on beach homes, and the families living in them deserve a straight answer and a crew that shows up.

Give it a watch.

Drier is not automatically better, and that surprises people.

Wood has a normal moisture content. Here in Pinellas County it lives around eight to twelve percent, and it has been sitting at that number since the house was built. Dry it far below that, or dry it too fast, and it moves. Hardwood cups the other direction. Trim splits. Joints open up at the corners.

Proper drying has a target, not a finish line. We meter the material, compare it to unaffected wood in the same house, and stop when it matches.

If a company cannot tell you what number they are drying to, they are guessing. Ask them.

Somebody asked us last week why we roll up with a truck full of machines for what looked like one wet hallway.

Fair question. Here's the short answer: air movers lift the moisture out of your floors and walls, and dehumidifiers pull it out of the air. Run one without the other and the water just cycles around the room and soaks back in.

Florida makes that trickier, since the air outside is already loaded with moisture. Opening windows works against us.

We broke down all five categories of gear we bring to a water loss, plus how we know when a home is actually dry.

When we set up for mold work, the first thing we do is not about mold at all.

We seal the room and make its air move the wrong way on purpose.

➡️ Plastic containment goes up around the work area
➡️ An air scrubber pulls air out of that space and filters it
➡️ Because more air leaves than enters, the room sits at slightly lower pressure than the rest of the house
➡️ Every gap now pulls air in, not out

That is negative pressure. It is why spores stay in one room instead of touring your ductwork while we work.

Anyone can scrub a wall. Containment protects the rest of your house: https://www.chriscarpetservice.com/mold-remediation-clearwater

Stand in your bathroom tonight and listen.

If the toilet hisses or refills on its own, the fill valve is wearing out. Not a flood yet. But that is the part that fails, and when it does, it fails open.

Go listen to yours.
