Ever wonder what happens after your recycling cart hits the curb? ๐Ÿš›๐Ÿ’จ
It travels straight to our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)โ€”pronounced "Murph"! Inside this engineering marvel, a mix of advanced optical sorters, magnets, and incredible human workers sort through tons of materials every single hour .But hereโ€™s the catch: a MRF is only as efficient as what YOU put in your bin. When non-recyclables enter the stream, they cause downstream contamination. This can break heavy sorting machinery, cause dangerous battery fires, and force an entire batch of clean recyclables into the landfill.
How you can help the MRF team today:
1.) Keep it loose: Never bag your recyclables. Plastic bags wrap around and jam spinning facility gears.
2.)Empty and dry: Leftover liquids degrade valuable cardboard and paper streams.
3.)No batteries: Keep lithium-ion batteries entirely out of your bins to prevent facility fires.
4.) Remember that anything smaller than a credit card falls through machinery and gets lost (or damages) machinery. Keep those small items out of the bin.
Let's work together to keep our recycling stream clean and our partner MRF operations running smoothly! โ™ป๏ธโœจ

Secure Your Load Las Cruces!
๐Ÿ“ˆ The good: Litter from unsecured loads along US roadways has dropped by more than half since 2020 - from an estimated 1 billion pieces to 454 million.
๐Ÿ“‰ The bad: That's still more than 450 million pieces of litter on our roads, plus another 200 million pieces along waterways and coastlines.

When debris falls from trucks, trailers, and vehicles, it doesn't just create litter - it can create safety hazards and impact our communities, our desert landscape, and our wildlife neighbors that also call it home.
Do your part by properly securing and covering your load before hitting the road. ๐Ÿ’š

It's the LAW in New Mexico that is enforceable by fines and penalties. SCSWA also has an Untarped Load Fee of $30.03

๐ŸŒŽ Wasting food isn't just a shameโ€”it is a climate disaster.
When we throw away food, we are not only wasting the money spent on the meal on our plate. We are throwing away every single resource it took to get that food to us. Here is the real cost of food waste:
๐Ÿ’ง Wasted Water: Tossing one burger wastes the same amount of water as a 90-minute shower.
๐Ÿšœ Wasted Land & Labor: Millions of acres are cleared, and farmers work untiredly, just to grow crops that end up in landfills.
๐Ÿš› Wasted Energy: Processing, packaging, and transporting food burns massive amounts of fossil fuels.๐Ÿ›‘ Methane Gas: Food rotting in landfills produces methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world, right behind the US and China.
The good news? Small changes at home make a massive difference.
Shop with a list, freeze your leftovers, and understand expiration dates. Let's stop treating food as disposable and STOP sending it to our landfill!

The summer heat is here!

While water balloons might seem like a great way to cool off after a day in the dunes, theyโ€™re not so great for the environment. The small rubber bits do not decompose and leave quite a mess! This can create problems for our wildlife populations and visitors who come after you. Consider alternatives like reusable water balloons or sponge balls. Please remember to recreate responsibly and !

WE NEED YOUR HELP LAS CRUCES!
These are photos taken today of one of the recycle loads picked up from the Amador Transfer Station.
As the photos reflect, extensive amounts of MEDICAL WASTE is seen. Within this load there were also adult diapers.
Please Note:
NO MEDICAL WASTE OR HAZARDOUS WASTE is accepted in our recycle processes!! Not only does this contaminate the load of recyclables but it creates a highly hazardous scenario for our employees and staff.

Don't let your celebration turn into a catastrophe! Fire departments and solid waste transfer stations see a massive spike in property and facility fires in the month of July because of improper firework disposal. Here is a quick, actionable guide to keeping your home and community safe:
๐Ÿงฏ Soak It! Submerge all used fireworks in a bucket of water. Leave them soaking overnight.
๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Bag It! After completely submerging fireworks overnight, place the wet fireworks into a plastic trash bag. Tie the bag securely to trap moisture.
๐Ÿš› Bin It! Put the sealed bag into your regular household trash bin. Never put fireworks into your recycling bin! Cardboard firework casings are contaminated with chemical residues and cannot be recycled.
๐Ÿ›‘ Wait! Keep trash bins stored away from your house, garage, or deck. Wait until the morning of your trash collection day to move bins to the curb.
