From student to statesman—every journey starts somewhere.

At New Mexico State University’s recent NMSU Founders Day, Garrey Carruthers was honored as an Aggie Legend—a recognition of a lifetime of leadership in education, public service, and New Mexico’s future. https://newsroom.nmsu.edu/news/carruthers--madrigal-recognized-at-nmsu-s-founders-day/s/e48581fd-aad3-431b-b033-f65eec10befe

But long before he served as governor or chancellor, Carruthers was part of something foundational at the NMSU Physical Science Laboratory.

➡️ As a student, he participated in PSL’s early co-op program—an initiative rooted in real-world, mission-driven work, including data reduction efforts that helped shape the laboratory’s applied research model.

Student engagement in PSL continues today—connecting students to national security, defense, and research careers through hands-on experience.

🎯 Then and now, the mission is the same:
Develop talent. Build capability. Deliver impact.

Carruthers’ journey is a powerful reminder:
When students are given real opportunities early, they don’t just build careers—they shape institutions, states, and the nation.

Hear directly from Governor Carruthers on how his PSL co-op experience helped shape his path—and why experiential learning matters. https://youtu.be/c2iCPx59--s?si=qIA3qMFWT6MuseiW
