Las Vegas wasn’t built on luck…it was built on trades!

In Season 4, Episode 4, we head into the desert to see how plumbers made it possible to build a city where water shouldn’t exist, and why this trade isn’t a fallback. Trades are a profession that provide for communities, fuel growth, and create real opportunity.

When Ryan Cruz got into trouble, his dad made him dig ditches. When college didn’t work out, his dad said, “Come work for the family for a while.” When Ryan had “two left hands,” and things weren’t clicking, his family stuck with him. That patience paid off.

30 years later, Ryan runs Cruise Plumbing in Vancouver, WA—the same company his dad Carl built. The company that saved him when he needed saving. Though his dad, Carl, was careful to not pressure his kids into the family business, Carl ended up giving him something much more valuable…a landing pad. A space where Ryan could discover himself and pave his own path forward.

Episode 3 from our first season of APS gives us an amazing example of what family businesses can provide: space to learn, fail, succeed, and figure it out.

Tony Cacciotti Not a long story. But an important one.

Tony started through family connections in oil and now…he’s solving real plumbing issues every day.

When asked what his message to young people considering the trade would be he kept it short and sweet… “Do it. You will be needed more than any other profession for years to come!”

We can’t say it any better. Every plumber has value. Every story matters.

No power grid.
No water mains.
No problem.

Martin Porte from Episode 2 Season 5, specializes in making remote communities in Tasmania fully self-sufficient through plumbing.

Episode Featured Project:
An Aboriginal island community (population 80) off the northeast coast. The solution:
☀️ Solar evacuated tube systems for hot water (works even in winter/snow, lasts 20 years, basically free energy)

💧 26,000L rainwater tanks (collecting from roof gutters)

🔄 Water purification systems (takes out all the nasties)

♻️ Off-grid septic systems This is the future of sustainable living—and plumbers are designing it.

Martin’s work isn’t just about fixing pipes. It’s about creating resilient systems that work with nature, not against it.

Throwing it back to Season 2, Episode 5 — first published on March 10, 2022 — and still one of the most inspiring stories we’ve ever shared.

Kristen Olson of Major Mechanical comes from three generations of plumbers, and in this episode, we followed her journey to becoming the president of one of the largest woman-owned plumbing businesses in Minneapolis. 🔧

Over a decade later, she’s still breaking barriers, mentoring the next generation of women entering the trades, and proving there’s no limit to what a plumbing career can lead to.
Oh — and she’s also a world champion horse show competitor. Just another reason her story sticks with us. 🐴

Revisit Season 2, Episode 5 now. Link in bio.
