This is a queen bee. A very very very large one. We’ve relocated a lot of colonies around Las Vegas, and this one blew us away.

Queens are already the longest bee in the hive, but this one seems to have taken that as a personal challenge. The workers around her appear unbothered. They must have had enough time to adjust.

She doesn’t forage, she doesn’t guard the entrance, and she has never once taken a vacation. Her entire job is laying eggs, and by the look of things, she’s excellent at it.

The comb is built downward from nothing but their own architecture.

The bees had built their home into the base of the fountain, tucked up underneath where the water runs, probably since February. Seven months is enough time for a colony to stop being a guest and start being a fixture.

The comb had grown long and heavy, dripping honey down onto the soil below by the time we got there, which is either a sign of a thriving hive or a sign we should have gotten the call sooner. Both, probably.
