A long time ago, in an entrepreneurial venture far far away when I used to own a website development firm, I did everything I could to bring all of our clients to one particular webhosting company.

I wasn’t a reseller, and I wasn’t making any money besides a modest one-time $50 referral fee, but my reasons were sound. This was an amazing hosting company with customer service that would blow your mind with its supreme awesomeness.

I encountered someone who was using ineffective language about the members of their group.

In working to segment their audience based on likelihood they would buy,

They Referred To Their Group Members As “Freeloaders.” Ouch!

I saw where this person was coming from.

Some people in the group would talk and talk and talk, but hadn’t shown up in the shopping cart as having bought products or joined the mastermind program.

In the meantime, they were getting all the educational benefits of being in the group for free.

Fair enough.

Nature of the beast.

Such is life.

This E-Mail Backfired, Big Time.

A client sent an e-mail without first checking to see if the green dot on my Skype was lit and typing “Got a sec?” like my consulting clients are entitled to do, and running this by me before sending that e-mail. I wish they would have.

(This is one of the reasons I say, “The moment you’re feeling really angry, that’s your mind and body letting you know this is the moment you REALLY need to calm down.”)

Some time ago, I was listening to an entrepreneurial podcast where this advice was given:

“If you’re giving your virtual assistant a lot of work, they should be giving you a discount. Say this to them: ‘Look, I’m responsible for about 40% of your volume. I’m asking you to adjust your fees downward, since I’m bringing you so much of your income. Also, I want to make sure you understand, I always come first, before your other clients, for the same reason.’ They owe you this courtesy.”

...he was teaching me three incredibly important lessons that have served me well as an entrepreneur, as well as helped my clients unearth the groundhogs and get much more done in less time while making their teams so much more eager to render exceptional service to customers:

1. When you call people to a meeting, you are asking for permission to take up their time. They grant it by showing up and playing full-tilt once they arrive.

2. People in the meeting know exactly how much time they’ve granted you – the moment you take up more time, you’re intruding into their time. It’s impolite and disrespectful. At Minute 61 of a one-hour meeting, your voice fades to a babble and all they hear is the ticking of their watch.

3. Once you disrespect someone by disregarding their time, they’ll gleefully shoot the messenger and discount the value of the message.
