Summer Reading Day 9,

As a manager, "don't talk about it, be about it". Arguing with coworkers and bosses, even when you are right may create ill will and enemies. Don't beat the dead horse. State your case passionately, then move on gracefully. Develop contingency plans, in secret, to help save the day.

As an entrepreneur, actions speak louder than words with customers, competitors, and vendors. Giving more service than you are paid for helps others to see your quality and commitment to excellence. Arguing with customers, or regulators, may hurt your reputation more than it will improve your profit margin.

Summer Reading Day 8,
As a manager, your excellence will attract supporters and haters. Ego and envy, unfortunately, may create enemies at your place of employment. This is the way of corporate life. A battle of will with peers is an unnecessary use of energy, but it is the game. Use misdirection to keep peers off balance, play to their egos.

As an entrepreneur, gaining market share is the way to survival. Strategic planning, branding, and marketing is key to growth. Make a plan, then execute the plan. Be flexible to incorporate new information. This keeps you from becoming emotional and overreacting to others. If you are successful, competitors will notice you, then seek to destroy you. Beware of the wolf in sheep's clothing.

As a manager, hire good people and let them do their jobs. Clear roadblocks for them and allow them to thrive. This helps your ability to recruit good staff, while your gaining favor with your superiors. Shine the light on yourself by being an exceptional supervisor. Getting the job done efficiently and effectively is why you are there, being selfish with the credit is a short term road to nowhere. Review Laws 1 and 5.

As an entrepreneur, leverage vendors, consultants, coaches, industry leaders, and staff to win in the marketplace. This helps to develop winning products, processes, and profit. Position yourself as an industry expert, and build your brand. You cannot do it alone, all the time, so be smart about it. Develop a master mind to help with strategic planning and your personal development. Being selfish with your time, and your money, may lead to failure.

As a manager, your reputation with superiors has to be cultivated. Volunteering for: company sponsored special initiative teams; community service projects; and jobs/positions nobody else wants; will help you shine a light on yourself as a "doer" and a "helper". This is how you skip to the front of the promotion line. Go the extra mile.

As an entrepreneur, attention in the community helps you to build brand awareness in the marketplace. A good public relations strategy allows you to control how others view you. Volunteering at high profile nonprofits, such as the local chamber of commerce, will put you in front of movers and shakers in your community. Additionally, if you make quality products, enter the best ones into competitions. Force others to see your shine.

As a manager, your reputation will help you recruit good staff, build alliances with peers, and improve your ability to get new job opportunities. A bad reputation may get you fired, or ostracized, even if it's not true. Proactively shape your reputation, use Laws 3 and 4 with the long term in mind.

As an entrepreneur, your business' reputation is the lifeline of your future. Prospects often ask for recommendations before making buying decisions. In the internet age, the reputation of your business is shaped online, by customers and vendors. Bad reviews, fair or unfair, can impact future cash flow. Use good customer service, branding, public relations, and marketing to give your business an advantage.

As a manager, you are a vital cog in the information flow. Information is a key to power and influence. The more you are able to control, the more you expand your power base. Giving away information too soon, or too much, may help others undermine your authority.

As an entrepreneur, information is vital to your company's existence. However, only share enough information to move others toward your outwardly stated goals. Talking too much, may alert your competition of your strengths and weaknesses, and create opportunities for failure.

As a manager, you have corporate goals and personal goals. Corporate goals, such as the mission and annual objectives, are widely known and should be shared and emphasized. Personal goals, such as career path planning or job search, should be concealed to prevent leaks and keep haters from interfering.

As an entrepreneur, your long term plans and strategies should only be shared with your master mind. This prevents your competition from learning your true intentions. Use misdirection in the marketplace. Build a trusted master mind to help advise on the best course of actions. Utilize their advice.

Summer Reading Day 2..

As a manager, hiring friends and family may create problems when you need to give them professional feedback, or when they need to give you feedback. Friends hold back, to protect feelings. Strangers, "enemies", may be the "wet blanket" you need to propel your business forward. Have firm boundaries, clear expectations, and encourage honesty.

As an entrepreneur, having friends and family as customers may create problems when you need to charge full price, or prevent scope creep. People you know may expect the "hook up", which may waste time and impact your cash flow. The worst customers may be the people you know.

Day 1...

As a manager, the trick is to make yourself look more valuable, i.e. shiny, without making your higher-ups look less valuable. Ego management is a key to leadership. If your manager is butt hurt over your glow, that could spell trouble for you.

As an entrepreneur, embarrassing your customers can be detrimental to your cash flow. "The customer is always right" is not always true, so handle customers with care. Bad reviews, online or by mouth, spread faster than good ones.
