Over Labor Day weekend, our emergency crews responded to multiple vehicle fires right here at Mount Charleston. Driving up steep mountain inclines puts extreme stress on your car’s engine, brakes, and cooling systems. When a vehicle overheats or malfunctions in our dry environment, it can instantly spark a catastrophic wildfire.
Before you make the trip up Kyle or Lee Canyon, please do a quick 5-minute vehicle check:
💧 Check your fluids: Ensure your coolant/antifreeze and engine oil levels are topped off to prevent overheating.
🚗 Inspect your brakes: Mountain driving requires heavy braking. Worn-out, metal-to-metal brakes throw intense sparks.
🛞 Maintain tire pressure: Low tire pressure or driving on an exposed rim can cause friction fires and flying sparks.
⛓️ Secure towing chains: If you are towing a trailer, make sure no chains are dragging on the asphalt to cause sparks.
Crucial Parking Reminder: Never park your vehicle over dry grass or brush. Your car’s catalytic converter and exhaust pipes get hot enough to ignite vegetation underneath you within seconds. Always stick to designated asphalt or dirt turnouts!
